Any thought of changing the Indian motorcycle name with all that is happening?

A couple of our office folks go to Minnesota every year to grouse hunt. They stay on a reservation in a cabin they rent, usually from the same folks and same cabin. This past year, there were postings everywhere about renaming Indian to "indigenous people". I don't have a problem with that. The only reason the original settlers were called Indians in the first place is Columbus thought he's landed in India.
Anyway, they always kid me now when I talk about my Indian motorcycle saying the name should be changed to Indigenous motorcycle. To me, I am honored to be riding an Indian Motorcycle. There is a tremendous amount of great history, respect and honor in our brand.

Really, it's like anything else in this world. Everything has a name and everybody with an opinion about that name good, bad or indifferent. Changing the name, removing a statue, attempting to re-writing or squash history may appease someone today but there will be someone tomorrow not happy about the change...and so goes humanity.

They were discussing doing that last week to my beloved(changing the name of) Fort Bragg. Maybe change Iron Mike to "man made of metal" and Gruber Road to, "road through the army base", and while we are at it I do believe a renaming of the 13 Confederate states is in order. Look, people got $hit on in ever era of this nation. I actually fall into several categories of these categories. I'm not sure renaming anything (there are certain blatant exceptions) changes the fact that the event occurred. Look, I'm a Micmac Indian-I'm not overly fond of Christopher Columbus's exploits. Ripping down his statute changes none of that. I am not Jesse Jackson who speaks for all the the African Americans (if they want it or not. I know my Mother rode on the back of every Chief I have ever owned (current two excepted as she passed in 2009) and loved them. I carried her ashes to the cemetery in the saddle bags and she would have loved that as well. I know I was in the Penobscot Nation in Indian Township Maine last summer and an elderly Penobscot man stopped me and asked me a 100 questions about my 2012 Vintage. He then asked me if he could sing a song, of course I said yes. A crowd gathered and he finished and said goodbye (we have since become very good friends). A man approached me and told me the gentleman was a tribal elder and rarely sings in public, or talks to outsiders. I have never heard a negative comment from any Native person about any of my Chiefs over the last 50 or so years. But times are changing. They are entitled to their view, so am I.

Most major cities here in Montana are named after Generals in the Indian wars of the 1870's. ...Pretty sure we won't be renaming cities in the Great State of Montana!!!

What ballteam name are you talking about? The Minnesota Vikings? And if so, why would you find that name offensive? I'm not trying to start any type of argument with you, but your post just totally confused me. If it's the Vikings, the what would be a more pc name? The Minnesota Scandinavians? pls explain as I sincerely am confused as to what offends you and why.

If history, why do we not have statues for Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini ... or for Americans like Dahmer, Kacznski, Benedict Arnold. They were all important historical figures? Do you think we should erect statues in parks for them?

I contend that history should be remembered and accessible to everyone in museums ... statues and monuments (and flags) in public places should be for tribute and honor.

Statues, monuments.... History, at least to me. We can be made aware of or reminded of both mistakes and positive contributions, we learn from our history.

I’m not sure of the exact phrase, but, if you don’t remember history you’re doomed to repeat it. Something like that. Statues, monuments, history books help us remember and not repeat our mistakes.

Actually History is repeated all the time, most likely because we already have the blueprint.

Just found this online article telling of Boot Monument for a wounded leg of his, yet lacks his name.
Really goes to show how weird this kind of thing gets.

(Link to article isn’t original one I had found, don’t know what happened to it, this other one is probably better anyhow. The other also mentioned he might’ve been swayed to side with the British due to the potential of French Catholic rule if he didn’t.
I was never fond of history anyhow. Which has the adverse effect of not knowing much about it!).

Yes, I knew of that 1887 monument, but I would consider it a monument to "non-recognition" of Arnold. I doesn't recognize him by name and it doesn't show his face/bust. It's a good example of how others, even decades ago, felt that even though someone does good (leads a major battle against the British), they shouldn't be honored by name because of negative deeds that the same individual also did. Was watching news with my morning coffee. The lead-in story was about extreme pressure being put on the Washington Redskins to change their name and logo (Indian Head). We've heard this crap before, except now they are being threatened by FedEx and Nike, who say they'll stop their advertising and support if the name is not changed. With all the cry-baby "sensitivity" issues infecting our society today, wonder when some dumb asses will come crying to Polaris. If Polaris gives into this pressure and horse shit, I'll not sell my Indian because it's my favorite bike... but it would be my last. What would they change the name to? Handee Dandee?! ... Geez, what a crazy world....

Too much fuss over this stuff these days. We need to get real jobs back to this country so people would be busy instead of having too much time on their hands. The non-working people are behind most of this nonsense.

This world is way to sensitive now. Moms wouldn't let them off the feed bags and they didnt wont off, hell they all still in the nest cuz no one gonna push em out cuz their parents are bigger babies then they are.

There is multiple people expressing their concerns about this motorcycle brand.

You want to preserve it, quit bringing it up.
Remember we are dealing w adults that are actually grown children.

Keep the subject out of their head and away from them and it won't even make their agenda. Keep that shiny thing in the other direction to keep em distracted
