The prices of used dark horses are dropping, and I can't decide between a new scout or a used dark horse...
Keep in mind that the DH (Chiefs) are larger than either two baggers (Roadmaster and Chieftain)-- they are longer and have a more slack front shock… Scout is light, agile and quick. Stock rear suspension on the Scout sucks (your back is your shock absorber), DH has a comfy mono under the seat. Buy the way you ride and what your body can take. I had a bad ass Scout-- but traded up to a Chieftain last week for comfort

Which one is faster should not be the deciding factor. If it is, a cruiser may not be what you're looking for. Plenty of faster bikes out there. You should select a cruiser based on how efficiently it accomplishes the type of riding you intend on doing. If a large majority of your riding is longer distances - 115+ miles, the DH is probably better. If you are like me and predominately ride to and from work, weekend rides, with a couple 200-300 mile day trips thrown in here and there - the Scout is plenty fast enough and plenty nimble to make the work commute fun.

One of the things I like about the Scout is that it honours the past, embraces the present, and looks to the future. It doesn't pretend to be air-cooled, but it makes being water-cooled stylish instead of utilitarian. The engine and frame work brilliantly and look beautiful. I really like the look of the Chiefs too, but I simply don't want that kind of bulk. If your roads are mainly straight and wide, and you just want to kick back in comfort for the long haul, go for the bigger bike; but, if you want a cruiser that is fast, nimble and fun, the Scout (60 in my case) is ideal.

I'd have to say the V-Max probably holds that title. The Triumph Rocket III and the Suzuki M109 are close but no cigar. The Scout is quick for sure but far from the quickest cruiser in stock form..
Quick? Or fast? I differentiate those terms..
If quick,, I'll put the Scout against any another cruiser in a heart beat.. fast? Like in a drag race? Ill go with what you mentioned.

But what's wrong with having one that's both? Like the Scout..it can ride long, and is fast.. who wouldnt want the faster most nimble of the options available in the certain niche desired?:D

Never been a cruiser guy. until I saw a 100hp integral cast frame and stressed member liquid cooled engine cruiser...the Scout. Now, I have a fast awesome handling cruiser..
Nirvana...

Makes sense the Scout would be quicker, it weighs 200 pounds less. You'd have to have a chubby rear seat passenger to make it even.

And if you averaged out its rating between torque and HP,, pretty close to the same out put. Just different. They are near being a simple switch between the TQ and HP..

While the ponderous bulk of the Dark Horse is appealing appearance wise, riding it would be like putting a really soft pillow on the side of a barge and sitting down upon it with your legs dangling over the side. I'm getting sleepy just thinking about it.

Let's get simple. The scout is faster in a race like acceleration, period. The DH is a bigger more comfortable cruiser with ver pleasant low end torque that gets the bike moving deceptively quick.

I think they are not directly comparable. You ride both you'll know which one is for you.

I wish the speed could be displayed on the digital display, since it's hard to read past 120. Guess it's not as bad as the 1980s when for a few years 150mph bikes were being issued 85mph speedometers.

Otherwise, the Scout speedo is actually pretty accurate. Run against a GPS the indicated speed was pretty much spot on, unlike most Japanese bikes that read 8-10% faster than actual.

I was struggling to decide between a scout and a chief. I mainly commute and on tight Sydney roads. I demoed the scout and the dark horse. The scout would've been more practical, but I fell in love with the cruiser. Bought the chief and it makes me smile every ride.

The day a DH can beat a Scout in a quarter mile, 0 to 60, or 0 to 100, is the day Hell freezes over
As evidenced in a 48 km drag, two Scouts, ( both red incidentally) and a Cheiftain back to Taupo during the NZ Indian Rally. The scouts totally out cornered and outdraged the big sister at every turn and the owner solidly praised what he had experienced when we all arrived back at the Resort.

I do believe he was up to that point convinced that his Cheiftain was the bees knees right up until two Scouts stung him. He was full of praise with the cornering ability and sheer acceleration And gave us both a pat on the back! Quite frankly I was on the limit of my abilities I felt, and will not be repeating the exercise any time soon. ( But Man!,..what a rush!)
