Whine at 3000 RPM?

Just picked up my Sixty the other day, and I now have around 210 miles on it. I noticed around 50 miles that right around 3000 rpm (any gear, but more pronounced in 1-3), there is this very short whine sound. I think it's coming from the right side of the bike.

I am able to reproduce it over and over again, and touching either of the brakes doesn't have any impact. It's definitely something related to engine speed. I also ride with a full face and ear plugs, so it's loud enough to hear. And this is definitely no the whine of fuel expanding in the tank. I have heard that sound on other bikes. This is more mechanical.

Has anyone else experienced this sound? I have owned many motorcycles, and know that some engines are noisy. This is a very unique sound, and only happens for a brief part of the RPMs. I'm going to take the bike to the dealer for the 500 mile service, but I was hoping someone else has heard this.

Thanks!

Check to see if you belt is maladjusted and rubbing on the side of the rear sprocket/Shiv.

Just a suggestion.... a belt rubbing the side of the sprocket can put up quite a noise.
I once had a whistle that I searched for a long time before I found it.
On an ST-1100 that I had when I got up to a certain speed a shrill whistle would start and would disappear as I slowed down.
I accidentally found it and was surprised at the simplicity of the noise.
The ST clutch and brake levers had a dimple/hole in the center of the ball on the bottom end of the lever.
The angle that I had the level of the levers cause air to rush over the hole at some speeds causing a shrill whistle.
I filled the holes with silicon and the noise is gone.
So keep looking, eventually something will help you will find the problem and determine the cause.

Good suggestions. I have been trying to put a hand on various parts to see if it is some sort of vibration. I'm sure I will track it down.

Has anyone else encountered this?

Just pretend it's turbo whistle.:) I'm guessing it's the valve train your hearing. Timing gears also have a slight whine to them. My Scout does have whistle between 2500 to 3500. After that the exhaust note drowns it out. I like the sound myself..

A turbo whistle would be awesome.

I wish I could ignore it, but it's super prevalent wearing earplugs. And it's such an un-motorcycle sound...

I'm guessing it is normal. It's just the fact that it only appears at one rpm, in every gear, and it's louder than any of the other normal drive train noise that has me a little worried.

We'll see what the dealer says...

Its the primary gear noise, yes they are straight cut, I love that noise, its normal, its the one thing I miss now that my pipes are louder. Enjoy it.

That is correct. If they would be helical gears they would be quieter but cost much more. How do I know? I was a set-up/operator gear cutter at Mack Trucks Machining and Assembly Plant for ten years. I retired after 33 years of service with Mack. At that time "Built Like a Mack Truck" was part of the language. Now Mack is owned by Volvo and that seems to be no longer the case. I'm glad I retired when I did. Sadly, American Companies are no longer American.

Mine has a whine in all gears but mostly in 3rd and 4th gears on acceleration and deceleration around 35 to 42 MPH. Dealer contacted Indian/ Polaris and they say that it is normal for this thansmission design. So ride it like you stole it, within reason of course.:p

My Scout 60 makes exactly the noise you describe. I notice it more when I'm using the screen, because that pushes the noise up to the rider. However, I rarely use the screen anymore, and have learned to ignore the whine anyway. I find it curiously reassuring that it's the kind of noise I associate with certain Japanese bikes that are renowned for their reliability!

Just to close the loop on this, I brought the bike into the dealer (MOM's Boston) for the 500 mile service yesterday. They said they heard the noise and it's normal.

I've had a bit of a whine which I think comes from the water pump area, but I don't worry. I had a similar sound from my Shadow's water pump area which Honda said was normal.
