USB port for Chief

Did this to add a USB charging port for my 2018 Chief, thought it would be useful for others too. Took less than 20 mins and cost <$50. Should work on other MY Chiefs and Dark horses too..

Part A

Step 1: Locate the pre wired delphi accessory port. It should have a black and grey wire. Most posts led me to think that the headlight nacelle needs to be removed, which if posts and videos are to be believed is a PITA, however, I was able to locate this by just turning the handlebar to the right all the way:

This port is pre-wired through the VCM and has 12 VDC across the two pins. The black wire is 0V and Grey/Gray is +12V DC. When the ignition is turned off this turns off too, so no chance of draining battery with leakage currents.

Step 2: Acquire parts to make a delphi to SAE harness. I bought all these from Amazon. I tried to buy moderately expensive parts, for e.g. the USB charger: there are several to choose from but I wanted to go with a name brand instead of getting a generic Chinese item that some reviews show catching on fire.

Step 3: Make the harness:

Step 4: Route the harness and connect it to the accessory port. Don't forget to route it through the handle-bar!

If you don't want go through the trouble of soldering and making the harness, I can make one and ship it to you for $25 (incl shipping to the 48 C-US).

I've found two of these connectors up in front of the headstock. One is cabled by grey & black wires, the other is cabled by green/red and black wires. I assumed these were for the heated grips (which I've ordered).

Can anyone confirm these are for the heated grips? I can't find any other unused connectors.

I took another look, and found two cables with green/red and black wires. So these must be for the heated grips, and the black and grey cable must be for the accessory of my choice. The schematic I have for the Indian Chief doesn't reflect this, so I hope the heated grips I have ordered will be the right ones when they arrive.

For 2018 and up they did prewire the bars for the heated grips, before that you gotta feed the wires thru the bars.

Also to the OP, the connector changed in 2019 so while still same concept, it’s not a Delphi connector anymore. 2018 and before should be same though.

I put one of these on my '14 Chief, I found the exact coupler from a company called "White Products" on the web. No need to cut and splice wires except on the USB which I used the battery clamp harness I got when I bought my battery tender. It came with 3 different styles.

well, farkle. After what I perceived was an acceptable wiring effort (I performed the splice twice on two different Delphi male connectors), I could not get power to my device. The USB box was fine, as I was able to hook in to my regular battery port under the seat and charge my phone. Any advice why this Delphi did not have power to it?

The Delphi connector you want to connect to has a grey wire with a white stripe and a black wire. You are not getting confused with the Delphi connectors for the heated grips mentioned above?

Also, power is only present when the power to the dash is active, i.e. when you switch the ignition on. If you want to be able to charge your phone without the ignition switched on, then the battery port under the seat is the way to go.

Thanks; I'll check again for the correct Delphi. I powered up and started the bike and confirmed that the regular SAE to battery tender brand USB was working.

EDIT while I would normally ascribe to operator error, I think I grabbed the correct mate -

I think I got red-to-red on the new wiring, and I perceive that the Delphi only goes together one direction

It looks a little different to my 2017 Chief. However, the red should go to the grey wire (positive) and the black to the black wire (negative),

Well, this continued to bug me, and one possibility was that the Polaris factory grey wire had power, my entire bag of Delphi couplings was cross-wired, and the Battery Tender (brand) wires were correctly wired (either that or I don't know how Delphi's work).. A bad batch of couplings appears to be the situation.

I decided to risk my device and reverse the wires on my middle splice. So I have grey (factory) into black (middle splice) and then pared to red at the SAE/USB product. It now works to charge my phone - although it's red-to black and black to grey.

After adhering the USB to the back of the nascele with double-sided tape, and we have a power outlet at the front.

Thanks, have located that plug on my '17 Dark Horse, with a switched 12v supply. I can access it without removing anything too, just put the bars full lock.

Here's the Delphi plug before untaping it on my 2018 steel gray Chief, visible/accessible from the left side without removing anything, like the OP said. Pic2 is from the right. I think the bottom of the plug is visible, but it'd be much trickier to get at without removing things as directed by the installation instructions for the Indian power port.

After reading the various options to install a USB charging solutions on the bike, I went about by adding a SAE splitter. One end charges / maintains the battery (input) and the other end has the USB adapter that fits into the cigarette charger.

It does remain permanently on, so I used a cigarette lighter socket that didn't have any LEDs that would otherwise drain the battery.

This method should in theory work on any in any model.

The other preferred option was to connect to the little grey cable that was hidden under tape but would turn on with the ignition however I couldn't find the connectors and didn't want to cut wires and affect my warranty.

I would also like to thank everyone for doing the grunt work. Spent several days researching the best way to do this and with what parts. I put together a little video with what I came up with. Hope it makes it easier for the next person trying to do this. I added links to the parts in the comments of the video.

Since this is my first post it's not going to let me post a link to it. You can find it on Youtube. Maybe it'll let me post a link later.
