Since I bought the bike used (I'm the 3rd owner) I wanted to verify exactly what was in the bike while I'm fixing this intake problem. So I pulled the cam cover and verified the LLoydz 585 cams.

Then I raised the front valve cover to peek at the valve springs and I see yellow paint on top of them.

It's my understanding that the yellow springs are the original OEM springs that don't always survive 585 cams. So I'm going to start pulling the motor out of the frame to pull the heads and install the upgraded springs.

If my understanding is wrong, please let me know. You'll be my best friend if you talk me out of all that work 😊

I have a set of high lift springs in the garage. I will take a look at them when I get home today and let you know what paint in on them. One other thing I noticed. You still have the original style timing chain tensioner. Like most of them out there it appears to be at the limit of what it can compensate for. The new tensioners are a much better design with a bigger adjuster shaft. I would consider this to be a worthy upgrade if you are already in the area. Dean

Original style first pic, the new version is the second pic

Here is what I have at home. My original springs were in for some time before I switched them out for the high lift springs and I really don’t see any evidence of paint on them. In the package are the high lift springs and they clearly have red paint towards the top. Not sure how relevant it all is. Maybe a different vendor. Maybe @RACNRAY or @CraigB1960 might know, I’m sure they have changed plenty of these springs and might know if the paint is relevant or not. Dean

I just saw this on ebay. I think it answers my question about the yellow colored springs.

So now I proceed with pulling the engine and getting parts on order.

I saw that LLoydz has a spring compression tool that works from the top without removing the head - using compressed air to hold the valves up.

Should I also replace the spring seat and seal?

Yes

Lloyd’z tool works well. There is a thread here that goes into detail when @RACNRAY and I replaced ours.

Here are the parts that should be replaced when doing the job:

Good find! Definitely something to remember if purchasing a used bike. As for the valve stem seat and seal, absolutely. They don't cost much and anytime I would be in this area I would certainly change them. If I remember right the new high lift springs were only about $100 for the full set. I did springs and seals when I dropped my motor for some top end work and put in the high lift springs even though I was running the stage 2 cams for the 111. Last year I decided to use a set of stage 3 cams I had in the shop and put them in this engine. Loved the boost in performance on the 111. I'm glad you found this and are addressing it. Running the 585s on the stock springs is just a ticking time bomb waiting to go off. It is not a matter of if but when the valve springs will fail using the 585s. Dean
