Living in Queenstown, we are only 2 hours from Oreti Beach, Invercargill. On a good day, it's one of the most bful beaches in NZ, and this is where Burt would test the Indian. Invercargill is also where the Burt Munro Challenge is held every February, the Sturgis of NZ I guess you could say. FYI, a girl just had her leg bit by a shark at 2am this morning down there, so riding is safer than swimming apparently.

Being based on a true story limits the amount of drama we have become accustomed to in fiction. Some truly down under repair moments ( Kiwis and Aussies both have a library of roadside repairs) make it genuine. My love of motorcycles makes almost any movie with it as content enjoyable. If Shawshank Redemption is on the top shelf and Educating Rita is buried in the basement under six feet of concrete, then this is on the third shelf from top.

Much of the movie is fiction. If you look at the real story, the movie basically exaggerates and flat out lies on certain events and happenings.

I have seen it about 5 times (or more), and it’s a great movie. The guy was just a little crazy, as every good biker should be… I mean, really, he slices the tread off of his tires (tyres) to make them high speed capable of 200+mph… and he casts his own pistons, in his shed… and he runs 200mph on a 1920’s Indian Scout… my kinda guy.
Edit: you can watch it for free on Pluto, free streaming movies…

Yeah this movie is not on the same shelf as the Shawshank redemption, actually there’s not many if any on the same shelf as Shawshank imho!

Yeah, a lot of movies "based on actual events" are like that. That's why they're movies/telling a story and not giving testimony/a documentary. As they say, "Don't let the truth get in the way of a good story."

As always, take those type of movies with a grain of salt...on your buttered popcorn. :)

It never was a big budget block buster film, more a good fun feeling film. Does not have to be a fact filled historical report. I have seen it several times over the years when it was a cold wet day. Each time it delivered a good story. Take the time to see it 👍

Kind of interesting thread for me.. I’m a. Movie fan of sorts and have favourites from many eras and ones that I believe are total duds. Motorcycle movies and shows are too rare and unfortunately mostly negative. SOA was in my humble opinion one of the least interesting shows ever produced. Half way through the series I wondered where they could find the space to put yet another hundred bodies. It became so ridiculous that the writers struggled to find a way to end it.
Outside of the motorcycle theme Chaplin’s genius was apparent in the Great Dictator. The Great Escape had some short but worthy motorcycle scenes, oddly in real life that never happened and actually no Americans were involved aint that strange.

Well, I finally got a chance to see the fastest Indian and enjoyed the movie but wish there was more about the mods he did and more tech stuff.

Still enjoyable, but I understand why some say it was meh.

Will have to watch the documentary now. There were some extra clips of the real Burt Munro on the DVD that I bought but not enough.

Now to get started on making my Indian the fastest Indian. :p

My wife & I were in New Zealand about 20 years ago when I first heard the name Burt Munro. Bought the book at a local bookshop and devoured it. After returning to the USA, I was inspired to buy my first Indian (Gilroy Chief), then the movie came out and everyone seemed to be fascinated with Indian MC’s!
I still have the book but alas not the bike..
I now have a 2018 Chief Vintage however & I have Burt to thank for introducing me to this incredible brand.
