The 500 mile first service (1,000km here)

How important is this service? I just rolled past the 1,000km. I cannot get my bike in for another 3 weeks. Am I supposed to stop riding?

This is my only complaint about Indian. Only 1 master tech within 300 miles where I live.

Hoping someone wise can let me know what do here. I could change the oil myself but I am not sure what all is included in that first service.

Change your oil and filter, check the belt tension, and check any fasteners you can get to yo ensure they are not loose. Use the list in the owner’s manual as your guide.
The rest should be able to wait so make your appointment and ride. Keep all receipts for any maintenance items you bought and a checklist of everything you checked. Present them to the dealer at the time of your appt.

If you have your Indian Rider account set up you can also add a maintenance record.

Best wishes.

When I bought my 2016 Roadmaster I bought an oil change kit with it. I live 500 kms from my dealer (Headingley Sports) and rode her home with the cruise locked on 120 kph. (didn't know there was a break-in period) Changed the oil the two days later. Got 67,000 kms on it now, and hasn't seen the dealer yet, except for a 20,000 km checkup and tire changes.

I think the 500mi is more critical than the 2500mi. The oil was much thicker coming out at the 500 mi mark. Like others said, change your oil, check your freeplay on the clutch and make sure everything else looks good. I'd properly torque the battery bolts as well.

I was in the same boat, service said not vital at 500 but should be done by 800 for sure. I had a maintenance plan, otherwise would have done the above myself. Oil & filter change, adjust clutch free play, torque battery terminals (and if you haven't already put anti-seize on the bolts holding the battery fairing on), belt tension (use a tensioner, not your finger ;) ) and you should be fine.

The initial oil change is the most important. The rest is to verify nothing shook loose. Just look it over really well. The 2500 mile service is pointless. Just skip it for the 5k. Heck, I’ll probably be at 5.5k by the time I go in for that one. I’ve got a big trip planned and not enough time to get it into the dealership and back. I’d rather take it in 500 miles late than 1k early so….

Trying not to panic but I rode on longer rides than anticipated and my appointment for first service and pipes is a week from tomorrow - I'm already at 950 miles. And I have a 300+ mile right planned for Sunday.... I don't want to cancel the ride but its a brand new 2022 so I don't want to mess it up either... Have a call into the dealership for direction - otherwise my guy offered to change oil and filter and check belt, etc for me Saturday... will see what the service guys say tomorrow :)

I was at 598 miles when I rolled in for my service, and I didn’t turn into a pumpkin. The bike didn’t either. :). Seriously, the dealer said I was on the low end of what they usually see for miles at the 500 mile service.
