Just saw my e-mail from Indian -- good grief! It's a beauty but $37k?? Really??

Makes me damn glad I got my 2015 when I did. And my dealer has a gorgeous black 2016 out of the box and on the floor for $24.9k. That's a 33% price increase.

Wow...

I personally wouldn't pay that much for the CVO or the Roadmaster Elite however,

The CVO is still $5K more than the Elite
The Elite does have upgraded intake and exhaust ***EDITED for an additional $1200 plus labor so you're still $3k less than a CVO see post below  EDITED***
The CVO needed the engine upgrade to be comparable with the Elite

So I was given a choice on upgrading my 2015 RM to another bike due to Dealer getting busted for damaging my bike. I looked back then at the hype on 2018 RM versus the 2017 RM and chose to do the 2017 due to Polaris I was told is limiting the ability on air cooled motors the carding of the ECM on fuel on performance upgrades on the 2018, in other words the 2018 forward air cooled motors will not be able to upgrade on fuel cards due to EPA agreements. Again this was hype but the resources for me were knowledgeable on their information. Here is the picture of my 2017 RM I picked up from Auburn Indian in Washington on 7-5-17.

You could take the basic RM, get custom paint, add the stereo ($1800), and replace the fender -- all for around $5k (or less). Everything else is the same.

Methinks Indian is trying to generate a tad of elitism. Shift the market upscale. I got a bargain!

Not likely. The fender alone is $900 as a part - maybe they will market as an accessory as cheaper, but I wouldn't hold my breath. So you are already have spent half of your $5K for a fender and stereo. You could get a decent single color or two-tone paint job for $2500, but nothing more than that. There are a LOT of parts on a RM and the level of detail on that paint job easily warrants the $6K price you would pay. A good painter would charge easily that much, if not more.

Interesting color combinations. Sad to see the thunder black and steel grey RM go to the wayside. The pearl white and star silver is probably pretty. Not sure about the black and gold. The RM elite is not my bag. I'm sure it is nice in person. Custom paint and more do dads for the added price. I will be interested to see if the hand controls and infotainment gets more user friendly with these models

Nothing will work according to Indian, HD, Yamaha, everyone. The computer will always stay in default until 30K miles on the 2018/2019. Its been written on heavily in motorcycle magazines. In 2020, it is permanent. So in other words, a 2018 must go past 30K miles until you can add a Dobeck or a controller of other brands. In 2020, its over.

Now...........like I mentioned.........some genius will invent a replacement module but it will be very expensive ( maybe 2 grand ) and this will take time for research. 2017 is the last year for constant playing around. Some people will not care one bit.

With Big Brother and technology taking place with even human beings inserted with tracking devices, bet they have autos/ bikes designed for big brother to know when someone had tampered with ECM and one get a big fine and bikes short themselves out. World is very strange today, miss the kick starting bikes more and more. At one time when the electric starts came out, guys were stating if you can't kick her over you should not ride!

Its the CARB 2020 rules and it gets worse in 2024 or 2025. You will see the M8 platform go across the board in Harley and even the XL Sportster models. Thats why they came up with the M8. Victory was not compliant and the 106 would have to be redesigned completely. Too costly. Indian came on board meeting all criteria with their 2014 intro.

Hence I stated earlier, air cooled ECM, my understanding the bikes running oil/water cooled will still have ability for ECM cards since their machines do not expand contract for emissions to escape as air cooled. HD dealer in Coos Bay told me back on the V-Rods when they came out how HD was going towards the fluid cooled motors.

ALL my friend. Just Google it. I been following this for the last year on American Iron and other magazines. This is a Godsend for Indian dealers as the options for performance will be mainly their own stuff and their card calibrations. Reference Donny Peterson American Iron on 2018 CARB rules for a start.

I can see that this would effect the aftermarket from hacking into the ECM software but not piggy back programmers like Dobeck and Power Commanders which modify the signal that comes out of the ECM. Dean

Guess you were in tight with the HD crowd then..
I am still in tight with many with HD status. I have some mechanical abilities especially when it comes to points/ carb jetting/ belt primaries/ etc. Rode vintage HD's from 1974 to now, still have a 1941 EL. My bad taste with HD is their twin cam junk, but its my personal evaluation besides all the litigation HD is trying to cover up. Anyway, love all bikes myself! BTW, have a complete stock 1948 chief in my shop, original all the way down to its 6volt system remastered by Wilson Plank in the 1990's, have documentation and pictures for verification!

I "heard" so it's not firsthand knowledge that the Elite line will have the upgraded side stand

Therefore saving you $$ in the long run with paintwork or other damages

Not sure my man.............the new modules are really different I hear. You could be right. I hope so. But the clamp down on this stuff is really going to hit hard.
The modules may be new but they still go out to solenoid fuel injectors. They can work all kinds of magic inside the ECMs but the output would be the same. Maybe something new is coming down, I just guess we will all find out together. Either way I will be holding on to my 15 RM for a long time. Dean

You may wish to go back to the Indian site. Stage 1 intake and exhaust are options. Same with the Stage 2 since Stage 1 intake and exhaust are prerequisites to the new cams. The Elite gets you a fancy paint job, the revised front fender and wheel, some chrome add ones and the side bag lids sound system. D

I stand corrected, didn't realize I had click the "Featured Accessories".
Here is the stock dyno and the accessories add $1200 plus labor so you're still $3k less than a CVO

I agree, but I need to correct myself. No revised front fender or front wheel on this one. Dean

I hear you. I don't know if there is a source of 'feedback' to the module or what. This all remains to be seen here. I hear all kinds of stuff. Like manufacturers amping up the 2017 production because of this. Who knows? I have a 2014 that is problem free, noise free, and plan on keeping it. Good post

I did a Thunder Mfg ( when they were still in business ) air cleaner, cat removal and drilled out plugs in the stock exhaust, and a Dobeck with Stage 1 settings. My plugs look perfect, does not backfire or burp at all, sweet running and not putting it on a dyno ever. Its perfect for me. No clacking, no problems whatsoever. This is a 2014 Chief Classic when everything was standard like lights, oil cooler, and gas gauge. Before Polaris's 'austerity program' that went into effect in 2016. Paint a little soft...........but not problems, and still original battery, never seen rain or been outside overnight like most of the bikes here. Just a good bike. I could say that about the 47 HD too for that matter but guess I lucked out.
Not going overboard in modifications. Just a little more oomph than stock and thats fine here. Everyone is different. I am seeing wrecked/insurance claim Indians now at auctions and would maybe really making one a Stage 3 screamer but I am kinda 'motorcycled' out for the time being. Just draw a line somewhere in mods. Steve

Well certainly you know what the HD answer to that will be.............right? The CVO is hand assembled by a hand picked team of drug free, flag waving union employees that are so dedicated that they pass on yearly vacations and other perks, ect., ect. That alone is priceless ...................will be the answer. LOL

Well certainly you know what the HD answer to that will be.
That is the problem I had with HD, their made up illusions on products they sell I.E. the TC bikes they sold had problems and HD knew them, but if one bought a CVO with the gear cam now for 6k more they would deliver a bike your life would not need to be worried about. I had many confrontations with HD manufacturer and Dealers, where they just passed the buck. Since I picked up the Indian, nothing but great communications on problems addressed. Sure I had to go through the food chain with Indian to Polaris, but they did put me through and with my documentations they addressed my needs. HD would pass me on to those that patronized me and later state problems was due to type of oil I used, or the ECM stated I was riding bike hard, etc. The Hwy. 101 Harley Davidson Dealership in 2003 was owned and operated by two attorneys who basically kicked me out of their dealership after paying 24k for the FLHTCUI I had 12k miles on before the tensioners went belly up telling me take us to court. That is how HD handles its problems, they have high end attorneys to blow smoke at customers, hence their stocks and sales have moved down and Indian had moved up.

The Elite series has quite a few additions or upgrades and is more than just paint. If you add stage 1&2 and a PVCX you'll still be under the cost of a CVO. Oh forgot no tuner allowed. BIG handicap!!!!!!!!! The 2018 bikes are not on my list off wants.
