The XA was also shaft-driven and had horizontally-opposed cylinders like the German BMW’s that had achieved so much combat success. When Harley realized that the Army was going to use the Willys Jeep as their general-purpose vehicle (not a motorcycle), they discontinued their development and production efforts. Indian continued with the 841.

At first I was puzzled by the pannier ~~ was that a laptop on it or was it a different configuration? Then I realized they are just spiral-bound booklets laid on the standard pannier.

Early in the war, based on the skid lids. Four elements of the WW2 USA bid specs are present: Thompson in vertical mount right side, ammo can on left strut, horn mounted below light, leather saddlebags.
