Helmet Knock Off Bike Seat, Is It Still Good To Go?

I set my Shoie J cruise open face helmet on my scout set and turned my head for a second and my grandson knocked it off of the bike seat and it hit the concrete drive way. It knocked one side of the shield loose and it lost the spring out of that side. Shoie was real quick about sending me a new one. Do you all think this damaged the helmet? Should I send it to Shoie and let them check it? It seems maybe one side of the helmet is easier to push in than the other. It may be the way the helmet is made because it is the side you push in to raise the face shield.

Likely not. But do what gives you peace of mind...

According to Snell, the real damage to a helmet happens when it's occupied. But they also recommend replacement every 3 to 5 years. Generally, an empty drop wouldn't be too concerning. But if it lands a certain way and cracks somehow....

I'd be concerned by the way it's easier to move on one side. You could see if some medical office would xray it for you and look for stress cracks. But that could cost as much as a new one.

I've only dropped a helmet once. But I was lucky, it grazed the side of the bike, landed gently and rolled. My general rule is if it drops directly down more than 3 feet onto a hard surface, I'll replace it. Especially if it seems structurally compromised (like yours).

Give it to the kid as a toy, and pick up a new one for yourself.

It’s the crush material under the shell that is the majority of the protection. A low drop may flex the shell, but won’t usually dent or compress the crush layer because your head isn’t in there to provide a resistance wall. It should be fine.

I’m sure it’s fine I’ve had a light weight one for 5 years now it’s fallen off my old Harley once or twice Id say anything 6 feet or higher and you might want to look at another one. You can call them and ask, but they may for liability tell you it’s bad now or they may say nope we’ve drop tested these things and here’s what we found.

My helmet is scuffed from a minor drop, but the damage appears superficial so I’m still using it.....just like a scratch on your bike, it’s just another battle scar. If the perceived “flexibility” in your helmet is “real” then I would replace it. I’d ask a friend to see if they can detect the same difference you noted before going that route.

Here’s what Snell has to say in response to your question:

in France the helmet is mandatory to ride a motorcycle. Normally it would be necessary to change the helmet every 5 years and if your helmet tone on the ground it is better to change it too, but there are many bikers who drop their helmet and no change them

I know it's a lot of money but you have to ask yourself, why did I spend that much in the first place? If it's because you wanted the protection and now it seems that protection has been compromised, then it seems pretty clear what to do.

I had a shoei fall from the saddle and hit the ground in the petrol station. Rode home, cut the straps off and bought a new helmet. I value my head too much to risk it. I have read enough that says a drop from that height will compromise the integrity of the helmet but each to their own. You asked - replace it!
