Freedom exhaust options

Fellow Indian riders. Looking for some honest opinions regarding Freedom exhaust systems. I'm looking at adding a Vintage to my stable and have questions regarding some of the options regarding Freedom exhaust systems. My RM has the Vance and Hines Turndown mufflers and I love the deep rumble I get with them but I am looking doing more of a "old school" Vintage bike and love the look of the shark fin exhaust tips. Don't care for the factory shark fin tips much but debating on the two options at Freedom. Here is the first

The second is the full dual exhaust with the 2.5 inch pipes.

The bike I am looking at already has the true dual headers with the regular 4 inch mufflers. Will the top option work with the dual header design? The Freedom site states that the 2.5 inch shark fin pipes only work with the Freedom headers. So I am a bit confused on what will work on what. For those with either of these designs how do you like them. How is the exhaust note, any tinney note to the sound.

Ultimately I was planning on doing the full dual header with 2.5 inch shark fin pipes as shown in the lower pic and I know I will take a small hit on performance. I'm going to throw a set of stage 3 cams in it and change out the valve springs. I know I can get a PV3 tune for this set up with AFR tuned for the different exhaust lengths and these cams. Needless to say I am not looking for all out performance but love the aggressive lopey idle that the stage 3 cams provide but I just don't want to sacrifice the sound of the bike just for the look. That is why I am thinking about both the 4 inch and 2.5 inch pipes. I look forward to everyone's input on this. Thanks, Dean

I've had the Freedom 2.5" True Duals on my 14 Chief Classic for about 7 years now and I still love them. Besides the sound (baffles installed), which I continue to receive compliments on wherever I go, The pipes still look brand new. Of course when not riding my bike is kept in my garage which has a/c and heat.

Many have told me that I have the best sounding Indian they've ever heard. These pipes are sold as a complete system with the matching head pipe so they'll not fit very well with what would normally come on a Vintage or Classic. I do have a fuel moto tune installed. These pipes totally fulfill the the "old school" look, no top rail for hard bags though so you'll need leather bags which is most likely what you'll be going for anyway.

I live less than a mile from the Gulf between Sarasota and Venice in SW Florida and I've heard nay sayers say that the pipes would get pitted or rust from the salt air, at this point from my experience that's just not true. The only thing I would do different looking back is that I should have purchased these pipes 9 years ago instead of 7 years ago. You can't go wrong.
Thanks for the response. When you say baffles installed are you referring to the quiet baffles? If so, did the baffles make a big difference in the sound? Dean

I bought a set of 2.5in pipes from a member here… that felt they were too loud. They kept the headers and changed the slip-ons. I have a stock bike with stock headers, cats in. The baffles are in and it’s only about 3 DB louder than the stock pipes (as measured from my iPhone with a DB app at 50f at idle). Slightly lower note than stock.

The issue for me was adapting the 2.5” pipes to the 4” header … Freedom does make a cone to adapt 4” slip-ons to the 2.5” headers. I called and emailed Freedom several times and did not get a response. I had to improvise an adapter. I am getting some rust on the shark tail end caps. I just clean it off.

👇👇👇This was bugging me a bit … I used the stock end caps and silicone sealant to keep them in place … without the glue they will fall out.

Thanks for the pics. Honestly for the look and the work involved I think I would go the full true dual exhaust with the 2.5 inch pipes. Dean

@Dean E I damn sure agree with this.
I installed a true dual system with round tips and baffles on my '17 RM about '18 or '19. After about a year, I just didn't like the volume. The bike sounded great at idle, super rumble. But, after an hour on the road, I had a headache. Switched to V&H turndowns. Much nicer. With the Freedom baffles, I did notice a pitch difference but I thought it because the V&H turndowns were lower.

What I did keep, was the Freedom dual headers, just slipping the V&H mufflers in place. There a couple of things you should know.
The transition between the slip-ons and header pipes is fugly. I just left it. I never thought about even looking for a transition adapter.

Here is a pic with the full Freedom header and round slip-ons. It has a smooth transition from header to slip-on.

This is the V&H slip-on. No smooth transition. I live with it.

Something to be aware of. IF you have to pull the gear sensor, it will be an all day job as the complete rear exhaust has to be removed and the front exhaust loosened enough to drop out of the way.

If I were doing this again, I would not install the dual headers. I would just de-cat the factory manifold and add the V&H slip-ons. I realize that isn't what you asked about. Just my .02.
I would completely agree with your assessment on these. I listened to a few videos on the system and did really like what I heard. This is not something I would go with on my RM but the Vintage I am doing is not going to be a bike I take trips on. This will be for local riding and back and forth to work. The Turndowns to me are perfect for the RM. Deep and throaty and not terrible loud although my wife will still put in ear plugs when we ride on the RM. She won't ride on this Vintage. It will strictly have a solo seat bike. Dean

I missed the Vintage part.

Here ya go. Full Freedom duals. Just not fishtails. I suppose I should have held out but these were on sale.
MUCH better than the factory set up. The bike no longer feels like it has a potato in the muffler. The baffles are in place and it is louder than the V&Hs on the Roadmaster.

You just gave me the urge to pull the bikes out and clean them.!
:giggle:
Wow, that is beautiful! The Vintage I am looking at has a lot of the tassles and I plan to add more of it. Then I plan to get custom plates for it that show "SHAGGY" on it! I think it will be a perfect way to compliment the old school look. Dean
