I know. It’s damn near impossible to insert the word ‘helmet’ into a post without the conversation deteriorating into ‘Helmet Wars: Episode 672.’

As to Crazy Al’s, I’ve worn full-face helmets most of my riding life, but have opted for the Crazy Al’s SOA half-helmet for the last two seasons and think the world of it. It’s ridiculously light, fits low on the brow so it doesn’t tend to lift much at speed, features a quick release chin strap that may swear you off D-rings for life, and has that DOT stamp. I believe I got mine both on sale and with free shipping from www.sillyswedescyclesource.com. They shipped quickly and were an honest pleasure to deal with.

I hope you’re able to find one at a price that works best for you. Oh, and I found them to be just slightly oversized. I’ve always worn an XL but their L fit me perfectly.
Greatly appreciated

DOT is the least stringent certification. Snell much better.

IMO, A DOT only certified helmet is not much more protective than wearing a CHEAP plastic hardhat if that. I've never understood why you wear a hardhat on a skyscraper. You fall from 300 feet untethered, chances are pretty good you wont survive it with are without a hardhat.
Any helmet that takes a direct hit above 35 m.p.h. will split open like an egg! I worked on an ambulance for 30 years and I have seen my share of dead bikers with their helmets on and my share who survived without any helmet. Sometimes it's just luck of the draw! Just getting out of bed in the morning is a risk.

I’ve wrecked at 45mph 70 and 103mph. And I’m still here no helmet on for any of the three wrecks. One I walked away from 1and 2 I was hospitalized for. When I went down coming across Montana at 110 went into a brutal high speed wheel wobble running thru a sweeping curve. My partners said I went down at about 103 they were behind me. Doc said your a very lucky man we should be sending you back home in a box. I told him it’s not luck it’s just not my time. I never thought I’d open my eyes again that day I wrecked. But I’ve always believed when it’s your time your going regardless the day and time has been picked and you will be there. I just thought after that one the man has other plans for me. Nothing but a pair of jeans and engineer boots on that day.

Yep, in Aug. 2014 I was run over by a crew cab dualey truck pulling a 16 ft. double axle trailer. Left turn ya know and NO signal of course! I broke almost every bone in my body and serious internal injuries. Had my helmet on, it was never touched and neither was any part of my spine. Layed up in ICU on a vent for 2 weeks. Three different times the Doc told my wife I was not going to live to see the sun come up! I recovered and went back to work in 3 and a half months! Rebuilt my bike and named it the "Widow Maker" and went back to riding. Been riding since 1967 and ain't stopping now!

I’m can say the same as a police officer for 14 years and counting, Ive seen many a crash some with outcomes I didn’t think would turn out the way they did. Like I’ve said many a time when the good lord wants me I’m going until then there is a reason I’m still here.

I wasnt just speaking of falling. And besides, something as light as a half pound falls from much more than 30 floors, its gonna leave a serious mark. Plastic hardhat or not.
Comparing apples and oranges. Not one person in this discussion is saying a hardhat will prevent all head injuries, but they make head injuries less severe than not wearing one. Whatever point you were trying to make was lost when you stood on a soap box. This is why people don't like helmet discussions because certain folks just can't help themselves from talking down to everyone who doesn't live like they do.

I really did hesitate on posting as I didn’t want to start a storm. Every person makes choices every day on what risks to accept. Riding with a half helmet is one I choose. I believe those that choose full face are passionate on safety (atgatt) and I highly respect that. Some of the folks I ride only with full face but choose to smoke. I don’t smoke but I don’t tell them the risk of smoking and they don’t tell me about risks of wearing half helmet. I pray they never get cancer and figure they pray I don’t crash. I enjoy their company and accept them and their choices. They are big boys. They know risks of choices and don’t need me to tell them

Key word Sometimes. I take my chances wit rather than witout, like the say in South Philly @ Geno's.

Excuse me. Im talking down to no one. Truly sorry you got that impression. Its just not fir me and I would prefer people I like and love to wear one.
As for you, please dont read to much into my writings. I nearly died June 6th and still have not recovered fully. My mind has not been a sharp since.
My apologies if my words offended you somehow.

@17NDNSTL lol you’ve never offended me ever ! And I have nothing against anyone who wears a helmet if I did I’d be the moron. You know how I think whatever works for the individual who chooses too or not too just as in the bike you or anyone chooses. I don’t know why you would even put me in that. Lol you of all know me better then that now knock that shit off ! :D

Do the subject helmets ever go on sale ?? Decided to hang up the novelty skid lid.

I appreciate the concern of those that are going to post about full face being much safer. Just moving to real DOT is a step up for me

Are you looking for cheap or that specific brand? Here is a place not far from me that has good deals, there are even some DOT's for $30.

I am not saying don't wear one, just that there are no guarantees in life. You pay your money and take your chances. Just like sometimes the parachute fails to deploy! Uh, oh

I'm not a paramedic but I have watched them on TV. I believe the best way to keep from getting hurt in a bike is to do everything to prevent getting into an accident. About every full faces helmet I have tried restricted my view and my ability to hear what is around me. Having my full senses and defensive driving has kept me going many, many miles. Wear whatever makes you sleep best at night. D

I was never speaking or thinking of you. Only responding to @streak and anyone else I may have somehow offended.

Nearly dying June 6th (6 hours or less left, when I entered surgery) tends to change ones attitude towards others. Somewhat for the good and sometimes very bad.

Mom always told me I could cut someones heart out with only my tongue. Not because of the way I talked to her, but others, I felt slighted by.
