Who has changed out the Scout grips/or plans to do so?

I'm looking for grips that are thicker, but still have the Indian vibe. The ability to add a throttle boss down the line would also be nice. Am I asking too much? ; - )

Biltwell grips installed a few days ago!

Dear RBinTEX,

I've got these grips and I have some questions:

Did you use the stock throttle sleeve or another new? In my workshop says that they cannot get the stock grip off from the throttle sleeve because they are welded. I can't believe that. Any video to show them???

How did you fix the problem of the gaps in both sides up to the control switches? Because the Biltwell Recoil grips are shorter than OEM.

Other different question: Where did you get those amazing side deflectors?

Thanks in advance.

I've done Biltwell and ProGrip. Leaning towards the ProGrip but I may change back. It's a 5 minute job with the right tools and I don't need to destroy the grips to remove them so I can reuse them if I get tired of what's on.

If you just want thicker grips, leather over wraps are pretty easy and go well with the style of the bike. I did that to mine, and am happy with the results. Good grip, no slipping, and the ribs of the stock grip come through after a while for a unique look. I got a darker brown to match my new seat, but as stated above, there are multiple options.

WillRide, did you put them on over the existing grips and if so, how did you secure the leather?

Looks good Brian, how is the throttle lock working out?
Any trip reports yet?
Atlas works as advertized, quality built. NO problems what so ever and am very satisfied. When activating the lock by pushing the button in it takes a little effort as it's new and a bit stiff, but should become easier as it brakes in and I become more use to it. When the Atlas is disengaged by pushing down on the button it totally releases with 0 friction. The throttle slams home. I did write a review and photos somewhere on this forum.

And thanks again RB

I just cut mine off, but if you really wanted to you could pry and roll the rubber off the panel that it is wrapped around and possibly blow it off with air or other means.
Not impossible of course, but not worth my time or trouble at the time.

There seemed to be quite a bit more glue on the throttle side than the clutch side.
On the clutch side I just grabbed it and twisted and it came off pretty easy!

With the Biltwell grips that I used, WD-40 and a little pressure they slide on easily and are very well seated.

Yeah ..... I'll probably slice off the grips. Ordering some Pro Grips. Want open end grips for my bar end mirrors. Also have bar end weights if I decide to go back to regular mirrors.

Switched mine to red Oury grips. The left stock grip came off easily.. polished chrome underneath with some grip glue. Used some mineral spirits to get the glue off then some 80 grit sandpaper to rough it up so that the new grip has something to... grip. I cut the throttle side off though, waste of time trying to save it.

I added some 4.5" Go Grips, about $10, just a few weeks of getting my bike. Wetted the insides with soapy water and blew some compressed air as I pushed them over the existing grips. Added a nice 3/8 inch to the grips and feels much better.

Oops, I mean Grab-On grips! Sorry

Open end grips are only a utility knife away... just sayin'.

I bought some padded grips that closely match Indian tan from Marks Custom Designs (MCD) on eBay. You can google his name and it will take you to his ebay page. I told him what I wanted, and he custom made them. I really love them.

Marks Custom has the leather press of the Indian Chief in headdress that he embosses the leather with. I considered those, but asked him to make my grips in tan leather with white stitching, no Chief embossed. Then I asked him to make a regular grip, no lacing holes, with the Chief embossed. I had that sewn on to my tank cover, which is also tan. Though not usually politically correct by any means, I thought having an image of an Indian on my grips seemed disrespectful.

They are great to work with. I told them what I wanted- padded, Indian tan, white stitching, no Indian embossing, etc, and they made exactly what I asked for. Since they were going off emails back and forth it took a couple tries to get the right product, but they hung in there and did it right. Now that they have correct dimensions, etc, they should be able to just knock them out.

They use bison leather, though, so the grain will be different than your seat, etc. The color match is very close.

They also have the press to emboss the Indian into the leather.

I had the same problem, I ended up buying 'Indian Motorcycle Heritage Handlebar wraps'....Two pieces of leather with the Indian Logo, that you wrap around your grips and tie with leather laces...They are really meant for 1" inch bars, but they will fit with a bit of thought..a bit pricey though...I have noticed the difference and I have small hands....I got them from Ebay U.S, if it ever stops raining here I will post a photo of them.

I guess so.

The only reason I knew was I tracked them down on ebay and noticed that there were none available (messaged from there)

Feel sorry for him, as the colour was perfect for the Scout, and in his own words its very difficult to find it.

I've dropped him a mail and asked for black with red laces (to go with the classic red scout)... hope he can do it.
