So I was being lazy and trying to get out of riding my Springfield to Annapolis for the first service. I called the Indian dealer in Seaford Delaware that is only 20 minutes from my house to check to see when they could do it and the cost. I never got past the cost as the service manager told me anywhere between $300 and $500. I mean really! It should be a flat fee unless there is a non-warranty issue they find. If they want $500 just say so. Don't try to pull me in and screw me over after my bike is in their hands. It's safe to say these guys won't be around long. I was quoted $290 at the other dealer. Which is bad enough, but I'll bite the bullet on the first service.

Yup, About $100 in parts plus labor. I do my own after service # 1.

It's as much a money grab as anything else. I'd change the oil & filter myself, then check nuts'n bolts, belt alignment, plus battery & ground connections to ensure all is well. Plus check anything else that comes to mind. These are things I do to my Vintage 1 or 2 times a season anyways. If you are at all mechanically inclined you'll likely do as good a job or better than the dealer.

I always make em throw the first service in for free whenever I buy anything new. After that, I’ll log the mileage and save reciepts in my booklet. Lol

I have taken mine in after doing my own oil change. Ask for a check over and an hours labour. They might notice things that I wouldn't know to look at.

300.00 is pretty fair for service on these bikes. If the dealership does all the required service items, then it is very fair. If it was just an oil change, then yes excessive.

Everyone complains about having poor techs at motorcycle dealerships. Well, that's because nobody wants to pay for service. So that causes the costs to rise. Also motorcycle dealerships do very low volume thus causing the price to increase. If you think about it, these costs are directly in line with the cost of motorcycle parts.

Years ago, the auto/truck industry was the same way. They got smart and offered Maintenace plans with the purchase of the vehicle. These maintenance plans actually cost more but are hidden to the average customer, because they are rolled into the financing. So, for only 10 dollars a month more you can get the 5-year maintenance plan. And now they require maintenance at every 5000 to 10000 miles, most people drive 10000 a year/ So that means in five years you service the vehicle either twice a year for 500.00 each time or once a year for 1000.00

And yes, there are bad dealerships and service departments. People have 2 choices, educate yourself and learn to do the Maintenace yourself, and buy the required tools. Or pay someone else.

When you ask for a quote on something they have done multiple times. They should give you a solid quote. I do it all the time in my electric business. I'm surprised these idiots in Seaford didn't ask to see my bank account so they knew what to charge.

Did you ask them why it could vary between 300-500? They might have explained themselves if you had asked.

At Orlando Indian the sales manager told me my first service on my scout would be $2400, $1800 if I had gotten the extended warranty. I looked at him like, you cant be serious. I have tried twice through email to contact the Lakeland store. guess i will have to call next.

does anyone know if i do my first 500 mile myself will it void factory warranty?

At Orlando Indian the sales manager told me my first service on my scout would be $2400, $1800 if I had gotten the extended warranty. I looked at him like, you cant be serious. I have tried twice through email to contact the Lakeland store. guess i will have to call next.

No, doing your own service cannot void the warranty. The routine service on any IM wouldn’t be $2,400 (nor $1,800). There was obviously a miscommunication/misunderstanding.

That is very fair for 1st service, but as you state, only if they do all the items in service checklist...

My issue is I have had more than a few dealerships who had the bike in the shop for less than an hour and tell me all done. When questioned if they actually did all the check list items, of course they did, but I ask them if they removed the seat on my RM as one of the checks is checking the battery terminals, clean and test... I always get puzzled looks... BTW - if dealerships actually did this, we would likely have a lot less electrical problems with bikes...

Doing your own service won’t void the warranty. Save the dated receipts for materials - and document everything as you do it. Yeah, it’s tedious, but still saves you a ton of money in the process. Write everything down in the notes section of your Owners Manual.
Keep in mind above all, you’re doing what’s required to keep your bike running properly. The $$ you save is what you’re ultimately paying yourself to do the service completely and correctly.

That’s crazy. I see a lot more poor customer service since covid. With the rates service departments are charging (my Ducati dealer went from $80/hr to $130 in a 9 month span), they should all give great service, but maybe like you say they are just morons, because that’s all they can find to hire.
