Nice bags, will be nicer if the color fits the tan color seat........
I've been debating these bags myself. I wish I could see the difference in person. I obviously prefer the OE bags, but I don't prefer them enough to spend an $800 premium right now :p

I have the OEM bags and the opening is the annoying aspect for me. They are bottle necked.

I plan to get a Corbin seat eventually, so I will be getting those bags. The color difference will not bother me at all. I have also added grip wraps that will match the bags

I knew I would be paying more for some ascetic components for my Scout such as a red paint job, tank badge, saddlebags, and much, much more. In my opinion (it's just MY opinion folks, so don't beat me up) that the OEM saddlebags mounted on the traditional, originally designed Scout far out shine any other aftermarket saddlebag I've seen so far. Yes some after market bags lock, are larger, made with different materials and styles. But the OEM have suited me very well carrying everything I've wanted to carry, from the liquor/grocery store to Home Depot. After all it's my motorcycle and not my truck. Sweat shirts, rain gear, tire pump, assorted gloves and more crap then necessary easily fit the bags . When wanting to carry more then the saddlebags can hold, usually from grocery shopping, the overflow goes into a couple of cotton mesh bags that I drape over the saddlebags for the last 10 miles home.

I might have sacrificed a couple things by going with the OEM saddlebags and not aftermarket, but I didn't sacrifice style. I'm attempting to maintain Indian's history and tradition as best as I can by riding Scout with real Indian tan leather/logo/designed bags mounted on my Indian red motorcycle. I "made it my own", and when CRUZEN, it's just not an ordinary ride, I'm styling, man, CRUZEN with style.

I agree the OEM looks way better, and I will very likely go with them at some point in the future (waiting to catch someone selling them second hand on the cheap), and I'm not a huge fan of the osprey and US saddlebags, but I think I'm gonna get the viking bags for now. OEM is way nicer, but not $800 nicer IMO. Plus I need bags for a cross country trip in a couple months :p

Hey please don't misunderstand, whatever works for you. If everyone had the same taste as me all Scouts would look alike which defeats the point of "making it your own". Personally many tricked out bikes don't work for me, but I really love seeing the innovations, design, and art many riders come up with. I steal good ideas wherever I find them.

Yeah, I begrudging have to agree with you Brian. I bought the OEM bags for the history etc but I do wish the ending was bigger. And like you I think the OEM bags on the bike have a style, a look all of their own

Well Alpal, I've been living in a 10x30 foot travel trailer (that's a caravan for those of you down under) for the past 12 years. By necessity I've had to adapt to living in a small place (been doing this tiny home thing long before the current fad). Also learned to make do, and make it work. So one could say that I'm a real happy camper with the very last thing left on my bucket list that I've lusted after for the past 53 years, my Scout.

decided to stay with the viking brown bags. Mounted easily enough. I like the size and the lock. The brown matches my grip wraps and jacket

@seascout I have a set of Odin bags coming. Any tips, trips, or hang-ups and advice you have for installation?

Thanks.
I had to go with easy brackets because the included mounting system caused the bottom bolt to hit the belt guard. I am rather *ahem* large, so this only happened over a big bump but it happened. I could have added spacers and a longer bolt but I figured the easy brackets would look neater and have the bonus of quick release that returned the bike to stock look. I otherwise love the bags and have gotten a few compliments, despite the imperfect leather match.
I just ordered a set of these today as well. We'll see how it goes!
Now you need to widen your parking space tape! Haha Looks good
I am happy now because if my wife hits the bike with the door it is the bags instead of the fender! That could be a marriage saver!
Looks like you have a nice set up Brian, looks comfortable. I like your post, very well written, I agree and feel exactly the same .. I also like seeing everyone else ride, but I am a bit of a purist myself ..

Okay! Good to know. Anything else I should know about installation? They are supposed to arrive today.
So many have said stuff like the "factory bags are nice, but not $800 nicer" am I to duduce than that all the other make of bags are only 100-200 dollars?
Obviously, I doubt that to be the case.. but, I do sense some "self convincing" going on..
I ride a bike to rid my self of lifes worries, like being held down by our "stuff"..much like going camping...
Ive found the factory bags more than ample for whats NEEDED for a overnight/tour ride. Rain gear, some tools, extra undies and socks,a change of street clothes, bottle of water or 2, a few tools and toiletries..
they accomplish that just fine,, and look so good!
Tho I can agree, the opening is a lil small, but, I cant think of anything I NEED on a ride that cant/wont fit. I feel its a "run about" motorcycle.. not a full dresser... So I wont be packing, like it is a dresser..so I always assume ill be locking my helmet on the bike, walking around with my jacket on and stuff like that.. if I wasnt in the mood for that sacrifice,, id take the car...
So, since I cant see my self bringing non necessities, the factory bags are well worth the extra 1-200 bills for the style, color match, line symmetry and resale alone..but, to each there own!;)

Sounds like you're the one doing the self-convincing ;) . Have you seen the Osprey bags? They match the bike's styling better and are of a better quality for almost 300 bones less - Osprey start at $625; OEM are 899 or 999 for black or brown, respectively.

The Viking Bags are a compromise in style in exchange for price, I'm not in denial about that, but quality? I think you'd be hard pressed to prove the OEM bags pay for themselves in this category. Even in style, though, they are not stand-out ugly either. The leather and buckles compliment the retro styling of the scout nicely. With that in mind, I really didn't have to do a lot of "self-convincing" to pull the trigger on $189 vs. $899

EDIT: I also just remembered the OEM bags sell the mounting hardware separate to the tune of $149. Who is self-convincing again?
