Underglow lights

Just purchased a kit from xwglow and curios as to what they will look like. Anybody else have led lights around the bike?

#3 ·
I've been looking at xkglow because of their ability to do 2 zones and hook the lights to the brake and turn signals. I have a hard time visualizing how something like that would look and install the lights in the proper location.

I bought the kit with 12 long strips, and 16 pod lights. So it should be really bright. :) I am going to hook up the brake lights to it, but not a huge fan of the turn signal option. Not for sure how I want to do the 2 zones yet. Left or right. Wheels and center. Front back. So many options!!

From the research I've done, to get brake / turn to work properly, you have to do a zone per side. IE: Zone 1 left and zone 2 right.

I'm not sure how it'll work with the Challenger since the brake signal is muxed into the turn signals.

I ordered this connector also, so we will see. I don’t want to cut the factory wiring Easy enough to test before install. If I have to use zone one and 2 that will be ok, from what I’m seeing I don’t see how you wouldn’t.

That connector is what I would have recommended. I basically have 3 of those on my bike right now. Its way overkill but it's also the way I added devices.

You'll just have to use 3 of the wires.

If you haven't, download and read the installation instructions. They mention the zones with turn capability.

I'm really watching this thread.... I have had the dual zone kit in my "cart" for so long, but never pulled the trigger because of the turn signal thing. But had I looked further I would've seen that maybe it is doable. Please do let me know if you can accomplish this type of setup:
  • zone 1 - wheels
  • zone 2 - engine/body
  • brakes - both zones light up red (irrespective of current zone color(s))
  • signals - left/right side light up accordingly (irrespective of current zone color(s))

Essentially I'm looking for the exact configuration they have set up in the video link I pasted up above.

That’s exactly what I am aiming for. Should have all the parts here sometime this next week or two. Then I will give it a shot, I will update the thread and let everybody know. If it works correctly it’s going to look amazing!

Ok so update..... I reached out to xk glow. In order to use the left and right turn signal you loose the ability to have duel zone. You could add another stand alone module that would appear as one in the app to gain the “third” zone. But in order to have turn signals, brakes, and the white output. You would loose duel zones. So I have to wire one zone right side of the bike and one zone left side of the bike.

No in the video they are showing actually 3 zones, being ran on 2 different controllers. The one app will run all 3 zones (2 from one controller, 1 from another) but you would need to “brains” to make it function like the video
I know. I want them to answer exactly what they did there, because it's precisely what I was looking to do. LOL They never got back to me when I emailed them about that setup though.
In the video they have 2 different controllers. They have 2 chrome controllers one with the built in turn signal module, one without so tech 4 zones

What's interesting is the video doesn't seem to reflect what the install instructions show. It was either a custom install or something is missing.

Ok so update on the install. So the brake light functions perfect. The turn signal wire is ran with the brake light, running light, and turn signals. So there is a lot of feed back in the line. So that function does not work. To fix this, I would have to isolate the turn signal wire from the front turn signals. This doesn't seem like the way I want to go. I don't want to cut the factory wiring on the turn signals. Lights look great, I will upload some pics for you all.

Thanks for the feedback. I have the Custom Dynamics Dynamic Load isolator on mine and I did a bunch of testing with it. The Challanger muxes the brake and turn to the rear lights as you found out. Custom Dynamics also sells a unit for Harleys that can take that signal and break it out to a normal turn output. I thought about getting it and testing it to see if it works. I talked to their support about it and they "couldn't make any promises." I offered to do all the testing and share my results but I would have had to pay full price (~$80) plus shipping just to cut off connectors I couldn't use. I don't have my trailer yet but if I ended up doing the underglows, I'd look at testing the unit again. (Same for the trailer.) With the DLI installed, I have the benefit of not needing the connector and can use the inputs on it to wire things up.

Just a quick update so brake lights work great turn signals are a different story tried a couple different methods can’t get anything solid yet but I will keep trying

You'd want to get something like the custom dynamics adapter and grab the brake light there.

The problem with the turns is that at that connector they are muxed with the brake lights. For things like the bag lights or plasma rods, it's not a big deal. For something that only expects a turn signal, then there are problems.

The lines also have a low constant voltage on them for the run lights.

You should have the ability to use something like the custom dynamics rear harness to get turn and brake.

That is what I am using. XkGlow for the LEDs, Custom Dynamics Triple Play for the brakes and Custom Dynamics Isolator for the floorboard running/turn LEDs.
RoadMaster Lighting

FWIW, I have the phone app to control the Xk lights and it is kind of a PITA. If I were redoing this I would just go with the fob controller. The fob doesn't match dancing lights to ZZ Top, but it is a simple device.

I wish I could upload a video clip of my blinkers in action. They get all sorts of compliments.

The local independent shop did it. He does better work than me.
Yes, he wired in a LED strip (it looks like a Plasma Rod) that is running light/blinker. Ran them though some relays so they are ON (running lights) then OFF when the turn signals come on. Opposite cycle of the turn signals. I would have done something more vanilla and never thought of setting up that circuit.

Try this link for a video.

He is doing my wife's Chieftain this week. I suspect hers will look nicer.
She is getting some Plasma Rods on the rear between the saddle bags and fender.

Can you get what product he's using at the floorboards? I've been wanting to do something like that but don't want to do full underglows.

Yes, I have a bunch of their stuff on my bike. I hadn't seen anything like that on the floorboards before.

@TechRider Will do.

He did something similar on my Vision almost 10 years ago. The red and yellow strips are not part of the ground effects package. They were just tied into the blinkers.

There is plenty of room to get a light strip into the pan. Below, you can it peeking out.
I later installed a fringe kit and Kuryakyn spear floorboards. It was easy to razor blade off the led strip and glue it to the new floorboard using RTV.

@msklein I see you are in Houston. Biker's Bay in Clute did the work.

I bet it's a dual color TruFlex. They look like they're just under $100 each to get run/brake/turn.

No. Here is his response.

I used Radiantz amber LED tubes 12".
The Radiantz lights are no longer available in the same density as the ones you have. Yours are 60 LED's /foot, the only ones now are 24/foot. Do you still want them? They are less expensive.

I did the Custom Dynamics Magical Wizards kit. Wondering now why I entertained the idea of it all in the first place... :cautious:
