So yes I know I opened myself up wide open with the tittle but seriously the only stupid question is the one you didn’t ask....at least in most instances. What is the purpose / function of a steel wool sleeve (sock) the slides overtop and or around a baffle? The fiberglass sheet then wraps around that steel wool.

Thanks for the replies as my stimulus check is now going towards a new washer and dryer since they both decided to take a crap at the same time. So no new exhaust. So I’m back to the drawing board on my Vance and Hines and was reviewing some old post including mine. The baffles have the steel wool sock slid over the baffel then fiberglass wrap. I’ve been debating on removing the steel wool and just putting the fiberglass wrap over the baffle to see how it sounds, if there may be any loss of low end and if any issues from my tune might occur.

My guess about the steel wool sock is that it stops fibers from the glass mat coming adrift and blowing out the rear.
