Yep, my stock Challenger seat is very comfortable for me I added the Utopia back rest to shorten up my reach to the bars a little bit.
Yep, my stock Challenger seat is very comfortable for me I added the Utopia back rest to shorten up my reach to the bars a little bit.I'll disagree with this. I have done SS on Mustangs and my Russell Day Long. If the seat fits you well you don't need any additional elements for comfort. Of course everyone's mileage will vary.
That is the first thing that I thought of when reading the OP. First thing I would do is lose the group ride idea, if you are actually planning on achieving a thousand miles somewhat safe in under a day.I have done several 1000 mile day rides but always solo. I would be concerned about doing it in a large group depending on what strategy they are planning on following. For me, it is easier to ride my own ride, stop when I want, for what I want. For some, it might be easier to stay motivated if you are part of a group. I will be interested to get your after ride report.
Sorry. I am very light on details. the local IMRG appears to participate yearly but i don't know any details. We are meetingJune 5th to hash out/answer questions. We had to today to "sign up". No idea why the seemingly arbitrary deadline. Other than doing what I can to ensure my personal success, I'm going w. the Flow. Next year I might go my own way.Is this the IBA ride they do every year that’s for some type of military charity and where everyone meets at different dealerships and ends somewhere in the south?

You sure can, like I said 15.5 hours @ 65 mph = 1000 So theoretically 500 rest for 8.5 and do 500 more. Riding for 24 hours nonstop @ 65mph gets you 1500Like Rusty Are I too did an unplanned but not as far ride from western WY but stopped in Topeka, KS to camp overnight. After I checked in and got my cabin I checked the odometer and saw I had ridden 873 miles. I thought I could have easily ridden the remainder but was unaware the rules for the Iron Butt as far as registration and where I had to ride and document. As a matter of fact I believe I did complete the remainder the next day within the 24 hour time restriction.....
So, not knowing, I read ant talk to a bunch of people who have set out to earn a patch. Some have made it, some not, my question is "If you have 24 hours to complete a ride of 1000 miles, why not do the bulk (700 miles) on day one, get a reduced rest and complete on day 2?"
Two things are essential. Back rest and gel seat cover. Your butt and your lumbar are the two most vulnerable spots for pain to develop and persist once it starts. My local ohio IMRG is doing a 1000 mi in 24 hr ride June 10th we are meeting 4am and once assembled - away we go.
I think they did this last year too but I didn't attend.
I have no experience with a ride of this duration. I have already "signed up" 15 of us so far.
I will attend but no idea what to expect hence seeking input...
I am seeking advice/comment with 3 questions:
a) in the 30 day's between now and then what (if anything) should I do to prepare for ride.
b) what, if anything should I do in the 24-48 hrs before 4am June 10th
c) general advice.
Additional background:
I am not worried about my overall skill level, I ride almost daily, doing ~11K a year.
I ride at night often, ride in rain often enough, and parking lot practice almost every ride.
Though I confess most days describing what I do as parking lot practice is being generous.
There's a lot at corner of street and I whip in, and do a few fig 8's trying to hit 18' loops but getting 19' loops.
followed by at least one attempt of being at 20 mph with covered brake and trying to stop in 15' but getting 17'
with these two things done I decree myself done and proceed with the day.
I normally rise at 7.
'
I routinely carry:
a toolkit sufficient to jump batteries, inflate tires, and fix minor issues solvable with MC hand tools.
a first aid kit with stuff I have seen others need over the years: OTC pillls/bandaids/bandages/bug-bite/creams/anti-itch/ace bandages/two tourniquets.
3 bottles of water
I have a pouch with hard candy, BP Rx
I ride with ear protection
MC phone holder charges by magnetic induction when phone is cradled.
Mechanically bike in great shape and will be due for oil change end of May.
You clearly have no idea. Your responses clearly indicate that you don't have any idea what your considering doing. Don't do it you could end up dead. When you do have an idea you will know what is involved. And I am not spoon feeding you...My local ohio IMRG is doing a 1000 mi in 24 hr ride June 10th we are meeting 4am and once assembled - away we go.

Cheers. And all the best. This is a unique form extreme endurance that requires 24 hour concentration. I have ridden vast distances but this takes it to another level entirely. Stay uprightThank you for your well-intentioned warning.
I will give it the full consideration that it is due.
