I have ordered a Motherwells backrest and a new Mustang Wide Tripper seat. I am not sure the backrest will fit over the seat. The seat is 11” wide and Motherwell (backrest) says they have 10 1/2” clearance.

The one thing I will not do without is the new seat. I really like its looks.

I’m thinking my options are:

1) Squeeze the set between the backrest and deal with the seat damage later down the road.
2) Have a local seat maker modify the Mustang seat.
3) Cancel the backrest and get an Indian backrest

These being said, does anyone have any other alternative?

Also, could someone please be good enough to measure the seat clearance on the 2019 Indian Chieftain backrest?

I appreciate the help!

The OEM backrest starts at 12"towards front of bike and tapers to 10.5" at backrest. I have that seat with OEM backrest.

Thank you very much for the response! That gives me a very viable option!

Thanks again!

I have that seat on a 2018 chieftain. I use the stock Indian passenger backrest. You shouldn't have to come from above with the backrest. I slide mine on from the rear. The only issue I have is when I remove the backrest it is tight lifting it off.

That’s great to know. Hopefully the Motherwell Backrest has the same dimensions. Otherwise I will be in the market for an OEM backrest.

Thanks, and ride safe!
