Question for the class.
I placed an order for a scout bobber back in June, I was told 3-6 weeks for delivery. Cool. Sold my old bike and waited. I was just about to go back and argue to get a refund of my down payment, when I got a phone call. My bike ships on the 7th of October. The question is will Indian or the dealership wave the setup fees of 1200 $ or the destination charge of 200$ please let me know if you have any dealings in this area

Thanks much

What is included in the "set up"? Real question, as I've never bought a brand new bike. I'd guess break out of crate, add oil/filter, check all nuts & bolts, check belt allignment, turn signals, lights, horn... kind of like a state inspection routine, maybe a short test ride? $1,200.00?? Geeezus, how long could set up take?

You know, the fees aren't entirely bs. I got certified to work on these a while back, and got to see exactly what goes into these fees. So basically, when they unpack these bikes, there really is a bit of work to be done on them. They do have to set stuff up, add fluids, run tests (the birth certificate it's called) and some other parts have to be adjusted. Now is it worth 1200 bucks... idk. Most motorcycle dealers have the transport and setup together, and I've never seen it cost that much. My dealer is like 800. Can't speak to what other manufacturers are like, for example, pretty sure Kawasaki ninjas come ready except you have to mount the mirrors and like 1 or 2 plastic body pieces. Takes 10 minutes. That's a scam charging a setup fee for that.

It’s a sellers market now, so your ability to negotiate is going to be limited. But, I’ve got to ask, if you’ve already agreed on a price why do you think there’s any room to dicker? $1200 for setup seems excessive. Even at $100/hour shop labor, that’s 12 hours.

I figured I was going to be a scout owner 2 weeks ago but things didn't go my way. I even had had 13,500 cash in hand

I went in to my local dealer 2 weeks ago to look at a NEW 2021 Deepwater ABS Scout. The list price was 13,299. I bout fell over when he told me it would be 17,400 out the door. I said 4 grand? where is that 4 grand hiding. He said 1300 tax 1200 destination. 600 doc, 400 TTL, +500 MVA.

So then I looked at a 2020 Deepwater ABS and the list price was 11,999 he said 14,388 out the door. I said the most I'm willing to go is 13,500 cash. He said okay I'll go talk to the manager. He came back and said yeah he said the price is the price 14,388. We know it will sell in a few days.

I said yeah that's a bit much for a used scout out of warranty. Both bikes are still there. So I guess they didn't sell in a few days.

The funny thing is everyone is talking about scarcity, but everywhere I have been inventory is pretty full. The dealer had 15-20 new scouts 6 or 7 used ones, a ton of chiefs, and at least 5 or 6 challengers. So if your hard up for a bike maybe check out Indian Tucson. HD Tucson has plenty of bikes as well.

This was my exact experience several years ago, twice. First I saw a "special" on a Honda Rebel 500, and I went in with cash, and left seriously disappointed when the price turned out to be $3k more than what was advertised. The same thing happened with JetSkis. It was even worse. I don't understand why these dealers stick with this outdated and very deceptive advertising model. It seems to turn off more buyers than it catches. In Florida (maybe federal?) there is a law that stopped car dealers from doing the exact same thing. The price they advertise must be the out the door price minus only taxes, tags and registration/financing fees. And it seems to work. You still have to deal with a salesperson, but at least what you thought are the prices are close to what they actually are. When I bought the scout, it was the worse buying experience ever. I almost walked away, and I will never go back to that dealer. But while riding the bike home, I forgot all of that and haven't looked back.:)

Thanks much

My setup fee was $560, but I negotiated in that they'd install a couple aftermarket things for me as well, specifically a heated seat and air horn. My total with accessories was $15,500 (no replacement for a factory paint-matched fairing, but ouch $1100) and it was $17,500 out the door. That comes to about $750 for everything else after tax.

The hell with buying new! I bought a used 2018 Sixty with 3000 miles 3 months ago for $7000. Hardly broken in. My 2nd used Scout. My 1st was a 2015, and it ran perfectly until I sold it 3 years later.

I would never give a dealer the satisfaction of paying any setup fees, even with the shortage of inventory. There are dozens of used Scouts out there, every style & color. We know how reliable they are right? So why buy new?
