I lived on a US Navy ship for 3.5 years, many moons ago. I know things can turn to shit very quickly on the water. There was no excuse for this disaster. Entirely Schettino's fault. Shouldn't have happened.

One account indicated he was "distracted" while in conversation. There are some other really damning accounts of his and the ships crew's behavior during evacuation.

Manitou incline here in colorado (just outside of colo spgs). A lot of fitness folks like to run / walk up this and looking down on a cloud layer is not unusual.
