USS Idaho unleashes 6,000 lbs of high explosive from turret #3 at point-blank range into Okinawa, April 1945. By comparison, my dad’s B-24 had a 5,000 lb bomb load ~~ so this single salvo from one turret exceeded what his entire bomber could do (and undoubtedly with greater accuracy). When all three turrets fired simultaneously, the concussion was so powerful it would kill anybody on deck ~~ so getting “buttoned up” was hugely important before firing a broadside (and also why those were relatively rare).
