I remember doing a cross country trip and arriving in Oregon. I hadn't seen gas station attendants in the USA in over three decades (and then it was an entirely different animal).
My tank was thirsty so I pulled into a station where a young attendant told me he "had to pump the gas." I explained to him that I was also going to use the toilet and he wasn't going to assist me at either location.

@gilroychief Not to hijack this thread, what is the protocol with NJ gas station attendants? Do you tip them or not? I always try to fill up when I 'cross a bridge' from PA, since gas prices are so much cheaper in NJ. However, I realize whatever money I save I'm usually back to PA prices once I tip the attendant.

I'm from Philly myself and it always struck me that gas was cheaper in Jersey and they had to pay someone to pump it. I wondered what was the point of having all of refineries on our side of the Delaware if we couldn't get a break on the price . . . .

The United States federal excise tax on gasoline is 18.4 cents per gallon. On top of that is a state tax, which varies by state of course. New Jersey tax is 41.4 cents per gallon. Pennsylvania tax is 58.7 per gallon. That’s the start of the difference.

What I despise is the fill valves that doesn't let you fill slowly. It's full on or nothing.

Hold your laughs, I'm new to the motorbike world and I just had my first visit to the gas pump.

I know some states can be different but where I am in NY, the rubber surrounding the gas pump needs to go up to a certain height before the safety is off and the gas will flow.

I can't get the pump far deep enough into the gas tank hole for that to happen so I had to use my hand to pull it up. As a result while pumping little drops of gas ricochets out, making a mess of my hands and tank.

So how do you properly fill a tank without making a mess?

Grab your cap and let the pump drip in it on the way to the tank. After tanking up slowly, put the cap back under the drizzling pump and away from the tank. Then pour out whatever went into your cap and screw it back on. Works perfectly.

What I've learned over the years is to gently squeeze the fill handle lever just enough so the gas goes into the tank slowly, instead of all over the outside of it.And it works!!!But that's me and as you guys should know by now " I AIN'T TOO BRIGHT" !! lol lol

I use one of these to hold the rubber sleeve back while I pump in the gas and then I clean up any gas overflow with a micro fiber cloth that I carry in my saddlebag:
