Seems to me you are one of those funny shaped people that don't fit the Scout seating mould, just like me. I tried all the seats but came back to the standard one. I put forward controls on and this helped a little, but the thing that did it for me was fitting a set of Helibars. Adjustable in three places and can move your hands back a whopping 4" from standard!! This got me against the backrest and allows me a much more comfortable ride. I also made up some spacers to fit behind the cushion which brings it forward another half inch and into your back. One other thing I did was to bend the mounting bracket slightly backwards as the backrest in that upright position always pressed into the small of my back and after a while would cause numbness. This may not be for everybody however as it could be due to the positioning of nerves in my lower back.

Gee, How long is a piece of string Buddy? There are many factors that depend just on you, body shape, leg length, how you sit the bike. Bit of a hard one to answer, that,...If the current backrest is good for you on a trip, don't change it, it ain't broke,....
The problem is NOT the size of the rider - to me the problem is an improperly curved support bracket. @Alpal seems to have found middle ground that works for him by bringing handle bars further back. I will be checking out this option... AFTER I send my seat and back rest to Russell Day Long for some comfy mods.

I had thoughts about the straight up-ness of that bracket so have bent it back aways and for me it is now more comfortable.

@jarhead1 nice ride! The picture of me on the scout with the backrest IS me in the riding position - my wee little arms even with the OEM handlebars for short peoples wont allow me to sit back any further. I'm gonna get some of those helibars Alpal has - $600.00 u.s. laterI love my back rest,,,, it is very supportive when traveling down the Highway at speed,,,, keeps you from having to hang on tight to the handle bars,,,,,.
Sitting on the bike in the showroom,,,,and actually riding it down the highway,,,,,,are TWO very different things.
