i recently purchased a lightly damaged 2017 springfield at an insurance auction. the question i have is this.
at idle there is a metal tinging sound for the lack of a better word. sounds like its coming from the exhaust.
is this normal? it is all stock but has had a cat delete done. anything above idle and the tinging disappears.

thanks

Probably means the CAT is removed. They ping when they are cold after start up

There are only 2 ways to get rid of the Tinging permanently and I did one of them. The "Tinging" "Pinging" noise drove me nuts. Even my wife asked about it. I don't care if it goes away once warm, I didn't want to hear it at all.

The cure? New exhaust headers and there are 2 of them that I know of. Rinehart Slimline true dual headers or Freedom Performance headers.

I chose the Rinehart because of the built in scavenging chamber that keeps the engine torque strong. Freedoms are free flowing, therefore lose some torque. I also kept the stock slipon mufflers and just drilled out the plugs. The result is strong pulling motor, moderate loudness when getting on the throttle and almost whisper quiet when cruising the back roads, which is just perfect for my wife and I and music at a comfortable level. Oh, and no more "Tingy" "Pingy" noises.

Here's an Indian with the Rinehart Slimline Headers

ok i fixed my ting, or ding or bell ringing sound in my exhaust.
now what are other common issues with these bikes??
rode it about a mile today for the first time and it seems to have a belt whine under heavy load.
saw on a u-tube vid where that was a common thing with these.

When coasting a low speeds do you hear the belt noise or only at high loads? To isolate the noise try rubbing some bar soap on the outboard and inboard sides of the belt and take it for a spin. Does the noise go away? Dean

it is only at high loads the belt looks to be riding in the center of the pully as it should.
the u-tube vid i watched the guy said he used a dry lube to take care of it. i'm not to concerned about that right now.
the road stars i used to ride the biggest issue with them is whether you were unlucky enough to get a knocker or not.
my first was my second was not.

My belt was making an unnerving noise whilst coasting to a stop. The tech loosened the belt slightly (he said whomever tightened last made it way too tight) and the unnerving noise went away.

i have some learning to do on this thing but i will get it to where it suits me or someone else will own it. i only gave $4700 for it and so far spent about $900 on mostly used parts. some new which are crazy high. when it comes to my machines i can get pretty picky. that pinging exhaust is one thing i couldn't handle. i don't care for the rims but that will come later if it works out that i keep it.
