New owner (list of questions inside) rode it 20 miles home in limp mode with bad gas

Hey ya'll! I just picked myself up a 2016 Scout 1133cc. The guy had it sitting in his garage for who knows how long? 2 years? 4 years? The battery didn't work when I went to go pick it up (guy should have had it charged cause he knew I was coming), so ran to Menards to get a battery real quick. But by then the bike was in "limp" mode (btw, i've never heard this term before until today). The gas in it was probably bad, but we threw some new premium in there and I had to drive it 20 miles home... yes I know it was bad, but I was kind of rushed into doing so. Was getting late.

The bike has... RSD track slip on exhaust, S2 S&S air cleaner kit, and Dynojet PV4 programmer.

During my ride home I was like why is this thing so slow? (Then after cruising at about 1-2 RPMs in 3rd gear, I felt some sputtering like it was finally opening up (or possibly getting a taste of that good gas), and WOOO! take off!, but only for a few seconds here and there and then back to going slow... now I finally understood what "limp mode" was. (For a second I thought I was riding a 1970 125cc enduro dirt bike it was going to slow.)

That being said, I made it home. Tried restarting and tried doing the ignition on/off reset I read on the forums. No dice. I seen some wet black stuff coming out the back of the exhaust. Not sure what it was or if I should be worried.

Over the weekend I plan to drain the gas, put premium in with some seafoam or lucas injector cleaner, the new battery should be charged by now, mess around with the Dynojet readings/maps, change the oil, (and check the spark plugs... something i've never done before on bikes). All that sound about right to why it's stuck in limp mode or whatever is going on?

In the meantime I have some other related/non-related questions, and I can assure you I looked through all the forums and my mind is just overwhelmed by all the different answers, so anybody who can give insight into any of the questions, I'd greatly appreciate it and add it to my Google Drive Folder/Doc.

  1. Limp mode how to get out of limp mode
  2. How to clear codes (without the dealer, I have the Dynojet installed on it, so I’m going to try that first)
  3. Oil type okay? Motul 7100 10w60 (people have said that the first number doesn’t matter and it should be okay, but the only 15w60 Motul oil is 300v for racing, same with amsoil, it says 15w60 is for dirt racing and you can only buy from their website really) What oil would you guys recommend that I can buy from Walmart/Amazon of my local auto parts store?
  4. Oil drain plug crush washers (anything on Amazon recommended that will work? I found some with inside diameter 12mm and 1.5mm thickness but have 20mm outside diameter, not 18/19mm)
  5. Bad gas (could this have caused the limp mode? Is 20 miles riding on year old gas going to do any real damage?)
  6. Oil/wet substance coming from exhaust (should I be super worried or is it probably just fuel that got soot in it?)
  7. Comfortable/cushy seat for passenger with back rest (already checked out Saddlemen, Corbin, Mustang seats)
  8. Keys for the 2016 scout (It looks like the key is very basic/stainless steel/thin, can I just get them cut anywhere? The Indian dealership for my Triumph Bobber told me it would be $250 plus for a key, but it’s not plain stainless steel like my Scout key, might have a fob/sensor in it)
  9. PDF anybody? Service manual for 2016 Scout? (I swear! I looked everywhere on the forums for the 2016 service/workshop manual, I couldn't find it anywhere! I already have the 2018+ manual saved, and the 2015 manual... which one do you think is more similar to the 2016 manual if I can't find it?)

Welcome …

If you have a PV3 you can clear codes … but first I would take pics or write down those code to figure out what possibly happening with the bike …

Limp Mode will clear when the conditions that caused it are corrected. If it was bad gas alone then remove and replace the bad gas … but there may be other issues causing misfires that can trigger a limp condition. Bad Plugs, loose plugs, plug wires not seated right or bad. Filthy air filter… ect …

Oil … the first number does matter … it’s the flow rate of the oil when cold … A 10w will flow easier than 15w … A 10w60 should be fine … DO NOT put any additives in the oil … The oil lubricates the engine, transmission and clutch… additives will damage the clutch… The oil change interval on a Scout is 10,000 miles … Since the bike was sitting … I would run the oil about 1500 miles … change it and send it to a lab … like Blackstone to be tested … it’s the only way to know what going on … Run the next change for 5000 miles, test … and then if all is good you can go 10,000 miles or one year … and test again …

You should also change the coolant …

Exhaust … no idea what coming out of it … But do make sure all the bolts are torqued to spec …

Service Manuals … What you have is good …

Keys … If you have a key … check with your local locksmith to see if they have a blank … If you need a blank … WitchDoctors usually has them … there are different blanks, so check you’re buying the right one … then any locksmith can cut it for you …

  1. Limp mode how to get out of limp mode
    1. Should clear as soon as the condition that caused it clears.
  2. How to clear codes (without the dealer, I have the Dynojet installed on it, so I’m going to try that first)
    1. Use your PV4 to read and clear any codes. Or after several engine cycles will clear themselves.
    1. That is a can of worms. You can purchase the Motul 7100 10W60 from Amazon here. or get the 15W60 Motul on Amazon here (racing is always good)! Or the Indian 15W60 on Amazon here. Or go for broke with the whole Indian oil kit on Amazon here.
  4. Oil drain plug crush washers (anything on Amazon recommended that will work? I found some with inside diameter 12mm and 1.5mm thickness but have 20mm outside diameter, not 18/19mm)
    1. Should be fine. Or from Amazon here.
  5. Bad gas (could this have caused the limp mode? Is 20 miles riding on year old gas going to do any real damage?)
    1. Yes...could have, but unlikely. I would drain tank, make sure there is no water in the bottom of tank (condensation could have formed). Use a very good gas system cleaner like BG Products 44K Fuel System Cleaner. Some of the best stuff out there.
  6. Oil/wet substance coming from exhaust (should I be super worried or is it probably just fuel that got soot in it?
    1. Most likely moisture and rich condition.
  7. Comfortable/cushy seat for passenger with back rest (already checked out Saddlemen, Corbin, Mustang seats)
    1. No clue
  8. Keys for the 2016 scout (It looks like the key is very basic/stainless steel/thin, can I just get them cut anywhere? The Indian dealership for my Triumph Bobber told me it would be $250 plus for a key, but it’s not plain stainless steel like my Scout key, might have a fob/sensor in it)
    1. ????
    1. My Scout manual is 2015, which covers later models. If you have a 2018, that is most likely more accurate. Nothing really has changed on the Scout from 2015 through 2018.

Some final thoughts. Do you have the correct STK file (factory stock file for your ECU)? I am not sure how the PV4 handles this one. It might be available from Dynojet's server once you setup an account with them and connect the PV4 to your account. I would flash the correct STK file to your ECU and not even consider running a custom tune until you get the bike running well again. Once you do, SHARE your STK file with me to indiantuning at gmail dot com with how your Scout is setup in the notes. I will SHARE back a custom (DJT) tune for your setup.
