My opinion after previously trying to eek out one more trip myself on a tire that is at end of life is that it's not worth the aggravation and stress to try and deal with it on the road. Replace the tire before you leave rather than 2,000 km (1,200 miles) into your trip. You won't have to worry about finding a shop, won't have to wait around while the work is being done, and you won't have to fret during the last 500 km wondering if the tire will make it. I went through the hassle on one trip in 2016 and swore I'd never do it again.
I did a little bit of quick math and stretching that tire out for the last 2,000 km will probably save you about $50 USD. To me, giving up $50 worth of rubber to not have to monkey with a tire change in the middle of a trip is money well spent.
Again, my opinion.
