I left the Indian dealer (Lou Fusz Motorsports) in O'Fallon Illinois this morning. I learned they are being purchased by a Holshauser (big name locally) that owns Green Mount Harley Davidson and is the home of GMR Motorsports also. They are moving Indian into the same complex mentioned above. We will have Indian and H.D. along with Can-Am, KTM, Suzuki and others all in the same complex. Interesting times.

For non Harley it has been this way for decades. I do recall one Harley shop with jap next door.

Fairbanks Alaska had Harley, victory, BMW, and a jap bike

But Indian already has a Polaris dealer in every area. Those dealers used to sell victory

My local dealerships GM said he doesn’t know how any dealership can sell Indian only. He said the busy months they sell 3-5 bikes. In the winter 2-3 and sometimes not that. They do sell Honda, Zero and Slingshots. I’m sure sales are better in warmer places, but here we usually have a down time of about 5 months for winter.

Indian Motorcycles of Racine here in Wisconsin has very nice complex that features a restaurant bar above the showroom as well as an outdoor entertainment space.

I am located in Central Virginia no Indian Dealership less than 150m away .. and as a matter of fact, I traveled 350m to Canton OH (North Star Indian, a great dealership) to trade my '12 Ness Vision for a '22 Pursuit .. (I miss that Vision). So I am pleased that Lynchburg Powersports (a Polaris Dealer) finally tookon opening an Indian Dealership approx 1 month ago ... Yay! Now called Indian of Forest, VA. So I stopped in to see what kind of Indian goodies they had .. which is limited, due to they are still waiting and stocking items.
But what gets my goat .. is Polaris & Indian service mgrs will say no to working on my 05 Victory TC (which Lloyd's installed a bigbore kit yrs ago .. and she's still zooming along) .. no current need for work, but being curious and visiting 3 Polaris or Indian dealerships over the yrs .. they each state they are not licensed or certified to work-on or ORDER Parts..
I think that's just crazy, bad-business and unconcerned for their clientele.

Welcome to Retail 101; it's all about position, being visible and getting "some piece of the pie", vs. no pie at all. Just look at a lot of Home Depot and Lowe's stores in key urban areas....they are sometimes on the same block and across the street from each other. Ditto for most the national burger and donut chains. Better to sell "something" than nothing........and these people have done their marketing research......they all know what they are doing. Most of the HD dealers that are closing are out "in the woods"; no traffic, no visibility, no options and few buyers. It's all about sales. No sales=no business.

My local Indian Motorcycle dealership takes in a lot of Harleys on trade, so this would make turn over much easier.
They know they can sell them.
After the Fort Worth HD dealer opened an Indian dealership he was able to afford to overhaul the HD building into what I call the "Taj MaHarley". Notice the Indian sign on the left. View attachment 876048
Many are taking on huge debt, forced by corporate. Some say that is why they are closing down

I worry Polaris is doing same thing to Indian dealers

The same thing is happening in San Antonio Texas. There are many different power sports types and brands in the same showroom. It’s a bit overwhelming when you first walk inside. No longer a stand-alone Indian dealership.

It does seem strange that there would be Indian and HD in the same store, but other power sport brands are combined at the same dealerships, so maybe it does make more sense. My go-to dealer sells multiple types of powersports equipment, but has a dedicated area of their huge store for the Indian motorcycles too (along with a dedicated Indian salesperson who is knowledgeable). I have purchased a can-am Spyder (wife), a couple of snowmobiles and my Indian, and have found them very easy to work with, along with great pricing. I think I am done with stand alone Indian dealerships at this point.

My go-to Indian dealership is Tytler Cycle of DePere Wisconsin. They are a multi-line dealer as well. I've always been happy going to them. The service has been good over the last 11 years that I have been riding Indian motorcycles.
