Have you ever had a helmet stolen off your bike?

3990 Views 87 Replies 65 Participants Last post by  Rogue Diesel
A friend recommended I remove the trunk from my RM to drop the weight and improve slow speed and off-the-kickstand mobility as we discussed my back issues. It makes sense since I ride solo, and I only use the trunk these days to store my helmet during restroom stops. I've never left my helmet on my bikes because of possible theft but my friend and my dealer told me that they have never heard of a helmet being stolen from a bike at rallies, service stations, etc.
Do any of you leave your helmets? Thanks.

My old one yes. My brand new $800 no. I have never had a helmet this expensive before, and all it takes is 1 person and it will be gone. I either use my trunk or if on my sportbike I carry with me.

I have worried about it being stolen several times, but I have never had it happen to me, nor do I know anyone who has theirs stolen.

It depends where I’m at. If it’s just fueling up probably not. My tour pack is usually too full to store a helmet. I pack a plastic coated bicycle cable with a paddle lock, hang my helmet on a foot peg and loop the cable through the roll bar when I’m going to be away for awhile. When I’m 2 up it’s usually with a trailer so we store them there. I always remove any blue tooth device too.

Hasn't happened to me in 30 years of leaving my helmet on the bike. Then again, i don't ride in big cities, so.....

Used to have helmet locks as standard equipment on my first bikes (yeah, back in the '70's and '80's). Back then, a decent helmet was around $120.00 (I was making $8,800.00/yr salary, so it's all proportionate).
My Brother locks his and his GFs in his trunk. I was running an LS2 Rebellion that I could fit in my saddlebag, but I can't get the Bell Pit Boss or the SRT Modular in there. I carry/use a cable lock through the D rings and fasten it to the rear highway bars when I think conditions are sketchy.
I'm not so worried about it being stolen as some kid playing with it before Mommy and Daddy (or I) notice it. As @pdrury3 said, the price for theft or damage isn't easily ignored so why chance it?

If I’m just getting gas or a quick trip to the store, I’ll leave my Modular helmet on and just put up the chin guard …
I have a lock on my front highway bar … I also use a cable gun lock to lock my girlfriend’s helmet to the rear luggage rack. I remove my Sena Bluetooth… There are other type’s of locks available…

25 years of solo riding, Legion Riders group rides. No one has ever had a helmet stolen. You might be the first. I just know I don't want to share someone's else's sweaty helmet.

Only once…
Went to the 4th of July fireworks at Promenade Park in Toledo back in the late ‘80’s, and had the helmets locked to the bike with the standard helmet lock on my Yamaha XV920RH. My wife and I came back after the fireworks, and found them gone… but the D-rings were still there! Kids and mopeds, still needed a helmet but they don’t worry about having them strapped on. Go figure… they cut the strap, left the D-rings lol.

Well think of it this way. We live in the world where people steal packages off of porches not even know what they contain. It's too easy to lock it up.

As long as you can hear well enough to hear someone addressing you....

I watched some anti-cop Reel on Social Media, saying the Police were all wrong responding to a Walmart call for help for a suspicious and dangerous looking customer.
It was a biker that went into walmart dressed in full bike gear, all black, with a full faced hemet he kept on with the visor down, and had his bluetooth playing music in the helmet. The video showed the store manager following him around through the whole store talking to him, but he never acknowledges him once. The cops arrive, stop the guy, question him and let him go on his way. The point of the video was this was all the Cops fault, they had no right even stopping him. I'm like, did they watch the same video I just watched? The guy's actions were suspicious, him being to oblivious and impolite to realize how menacing he appeared was not everyone else's fault.

Sorry folks, now a days, if you walk into a large public area, covered in black protective equipment head to toe, helmet on, face hidden and shielded then fail to acknowledge people addressing you, you are going to alarm people. Its that simple, take your helmet off, or at least like EvilMonkey, pull up the face guard so people can see your face and acknowledge people when they address you. If you have your ear plugs in or music playing in your ear to the point you can't hear people obviously talking to you, that's your fault, not theirs's.

I've never had a helmet stolen, but have had a few buddies who have had them taken, or kids play with them and drop them. I tend to either carry mine with me or lock it on the bike with a helmet lock.

In 50 years of riding road bikes in 49 states 3 provinces, I’ve never had anything stolen until 2 summers ago. In Seattle @ my Grand Daughters apartment complex. The parking lot looked to be pretty secure with a locked gate. My bike was right under the bedroom window. The only thing that was stolen was a $20 digital tire pressure. Gauge. The thief figured out how to open the left cubby hole on the fairing leaving the case the gauge was in on the ground. Fortunately he didn't try to pry anything open or due any damage. I’ve never worried about thievery at biker/motorcycle events. I know most of us prefer to park in front of a motel room, sit by a window at a restaurant with the bike in view etc…Unfortunately we’re living in a different world now.

So far I’ve not had any items stolen from my bike. I’m more concerned about the jacket and gloves being stolen. I’m very fond of my Langlitz jackets. I take my stuff inside if I’m concerned.

No stolen helmets yet. My buddy's old BMW (1990's) has a locking mechanism just under the seat to lock the helmet to the bike. It would be a nice addition to our bikes.

There is a saying " better to be safe, than sorry ? or something like that" I also
ride a full dress RM, I only leave my helmet out, if I am close to the bike and I can see it, otherwise, I either take it with me or leave it in the saddlebag, things do happens.

It really depends on where I'm at. 95% of the time I leave my $1,000 helmet on my bike. Sometimes there's two identical helmets on my bike with my son rides with me. FYI Shoei Neotec II and communicator comes out to a nice even $1K. If you feel like you shouldn't leave it, you probably shouldn't. Follow your gut feeling.
