This is a review for the Freedom Sharp Curve plus their "quiet muffler" for a 2024 Indian Chief Dark Horse 116

Part Number AC00170 (put this here for the search engines)

I ordered these during their 4th of July sale which is now over.

This might be the only review for the sharp curve (or radical radius) Freedom "quiet muffler" on the internet unless my googlefu is slipping. There's one youtube video of the differences on a Harley but honestly recordings of exhaust are pretty pointless to me. I personally can't tell the difference other than tone. (loudness and resonation are lost)

First a brief review on the Freedom Sharp Curve exhaust. I saw so many mixed reviews about Freedom in general. Lots of bad reviews about their customer service, rusting, quality, missing pieces and lots of picture posts of people who seem pretty happy but no real details on the experience. Lots of silly "how hard was it to install" back and forth. I ordered the exhaust and the quiet muffler on Friday, July 5th. I am on the east coast. I got a shipping notification on Monday the 8th that both had shipped and they were on my doorstep on Friday the 12th. That's pretty damn good IMO and better than some Akrapovic orders I have made from the EU. The exhaust was complete in one box and the quiet muffler was by itself in another. Another great bonus, I got both the open pipe and the muffler-- I wasn't expecting that but for the price I guess it makes sense. I unpacked everything and laid it out. The exhaust was well wrapped, packed and padded. No scratches or any issues on any of the components. Overall quality of the exhaust is very good. Not superb but not awful like I have seen in other reviews either. Time will tell on longevity but overall I had no issues with fitment, all of the hardware was solid straight, threads were clean and things went together well and quite easily.

I installed the exhaust with the quiet muffler from the start. I didn't even bother test fitting the open pipe. I knew it would be too loud for me. For those of you who have a strong opinion about loud, please save it for another thread. I personally am dealing with high frequency hearing loss, tinitus, vestibular issues and central auditory processing disorder all from working on loud jet aircraft and fumes from JP8 which is a jet fuel. You can be a tough guy all you'd like and wreck your hearing and I won't say a word. (Maybe I will and you won't have to listen to me).

Before the swap I was running the stock headers, with the cat and Rinehart slip-ons. I really liked the sound of these but not the look and all of the weight of that setup. It just looks awkward. I wanted to put piggy on a little diet and fix the look and those were my main factors. The Rinehart setup tested at about 86db (measured about 10' in my driveway). After swapping over, the Freedom Sharp Curve with quiet muffler tested at about 88.5db with the same parameters. This was the first surprise. The second surprise was the Rineharts reverberated in my helmet slightly. I wear hearing protection under my full-face helmet, so this wasn't too bothersome but it was noticeable. Even though the Freedom setup is 2.5db louder, it doesn't resonate at all. Finally, under load and above 2500 RPM the Freedom setup sounds much meaner. I really can understand the comments of this exhaust with the open pipe as being "too much" for some. For me, I feel like I have lucked out as I got everything I was aiming for (better look and lower weight) but also the bonus of it sounds better all around.

I hope this review helps anyone else who was searching for this info like I was. Please let me know if I can answer any questions and I'll do my best.

Thank you for your detailed review. I actually got the very same configuration as yours and also during the July 4th sale, however, I haven’t gotten to install it yet, but I have some concerns that even with the quiet baffle it will be too loud, so I was looking a bit into what additional baffles I could add to it, but because everything is so narrow and tight on these pipes there is hardly anything that I could come up with. I guess I will just go ahead, install it as is and see what it’s like.

I also got rather sensitive ears, but the blue Hearos xtreme protection plugs work pretty well for me.

So overall you don’t find these pipes with the quiet baffle too loud (using earplugs and full face helmet)? How about any drone cruising at highway speed?

Loudness is so subjective and really hard to nail down. I'll give you a little more context on me and maybe that will help?

I wear a full face helmet. I have more than one. Some reverberate at certain exhaust frequencies (Icon) others do not (Arai).
I wear custom earplugs-- they are actually custom in-ear monitors and I hook them into my Cardo so they do double duty.
My hearing loss is mostly high frequency, so not really exhaust noise. However if I subject myself to too much noise, my tinnitus goes berserk.
I find that this exhaust setup will get loud if you're ripping, but still not obnoxiously so. When cruising along or idling it's fairly mild.
I think highway noise will depend on gear and speed. Higher revs do make more noise but nothing that bothers me personally nor do I have problems with it.

I realize it's a big investment of time to experiment with this. I went through the same thing and was concerned in the same way you are. I am still very happy with my decision if that helps.

Thanks for the input. Yeah, I agree, loudness is subjective. I guess best to just install it and see what it’s like and then take it from there.
It’s indeed a bit of a time investment fiddling with it, but probably worth in the long run. Luckily the header bolts are not that difficult to reach and to play around with you only need to remove the rear part of the exhaust. I’m thinking to leave the heat shields off for a while until I get it “tuned in”. I found some parts online that might actually fit the pipes and might quiet it down a bit more.

My bike is a '24 with the Bosch MG1. Tunes were (still are?) limited to bench tunes. The options at the time for me were Lloyd's, RVS and Dynojet. I had a Lloyd's tune on a Challenger that I wasn't happy with so they were out and Dynojet seemed a little more canned to me than RVS but that was opinion based only. I am happy with RVS-- the tune has been good and their support also great.

I think you are the only other person i've come across (other than myself) who was not a fan of the Lloydz tune! A bit of sidetracking- but what was it about it that you didn't like. I have a bunch of lurching at low throttle inputs that happened after getting the tune, they took no responsibility and wouldn't assist at all with getting the ECU sent back ($200 for quick shipping from my area) despite me being the only person unhappy with it.

Thank for this review, I also have had my eye on this exhaust. Currently also running the Rinehearts Chrome/Chrome (if anyone wants to purchase them) Looking to go with the sharp radius to stop the droning in my helmet, clean up the look and loose some weight - so this review hits exactly what i'm looking to do. And with the Quiet baffles. I'm glad to hear positive things before spending that money!

for the past 14 months i have been running the "open pipes" absolutely love the sound but in all honesty it is on the obnoxiously loud side of things, booked in next tuesday to swap them to the quiet pipes. hopefully it drops a good amount, over here in Australia, straight piped vehicles are hugely frowned on by law enforcement

As I was reading through your review and reading about your hearing loss symptoms, I thought to myself, this dude must have spent his career working in the paper making industry. Then I got to jet aircraft. That made sense. That's close to the same volume that logs make as they are run through a Murco or Carthage chipper. 37 years of working in the wood processing department, while always wearing hearing protection have left me with similar hearing loss.
I was happy to read that you still wear hearing protection while riding motorcycle. Even though you do wear a helmet and are running quiet pipes. I usually shake my head and smile when other motorcycle riders tell me that they don't wear hearing protection because they always a helmet or just don't think that hearing protection is necessary, usually because they tell me their pipes aren't that loud. if I do say anything, I tell them it's not the noise of the pipes that does the real damage to their hearing while riding motorcycle, it's the wind noise.
When I bought my 2024 Challenger limited last year, at that time Polaris wasn't offering a tune to go with any slip-ons, so I left the pipes stock. That's the first time in 43 years that I'd ever done that. While I don't jump up and down over the looks of them, and I kind of miss the louder pipes, there's something positive about running really long distances over a day of riding with quieter pipes on the bike. That was a really good review. I'm going to check them out.

Sounds pretty similar to what I've dealt with and them refusing to state that anything could be wrong with their tunes. They fully brushed off my stuff and the only option was to leave myself out of pocket substantially $500 in shipping and a ton of complication in my life for a $700 tune that would be refunded. It just didn't make sense to move forward with them to even have it removed.

I'm with you on that. I've been in the auto industry a long time and was very disappointed. The amount of personal offense he took from me requesting a refund was wild!
