I know there has been much discussion about this but I am looking for opinions. Indian has just contacted me with a "promotion" on buying the extended warranty because mine is due to expire soon. I only got a phone message so I don't know what the deal is. I have been wondering whether to buy this given that we are sitting on probably the most electronic and computer technology that has ever been put into a bike.

Since there is no altruism, I see Indian's actions as having two possibilities:
  1. They have a lot of claims and are trying to improve the revenue to the warranty fund to pay for them. On the other hand, if they have lots of claims, it would be strange to invite others into the coverage when they eventually will be required to pay them.
  2. They don't have lots of claims so it's a good bet for them to have more people buy the warranty as it creates a revenue stream for them.
My gut says to buy it just because it would probably cost 3 grand just to replace the screen if it failed. But, I also understand failure models and if it hasn't failed early, then my chances are pretty good that it will last.

Any opinions on this?

Well, I always feel that your really buying peace of mind with extended warranties and as we age, this is certainly important to us. I guess you need to weigh out the cost of the warranty versus what future service might cost you. Can you comfortably afford to pay for the service if your scooter has a catastrophic failure? If yes, self insure...if no, an extended warranty might be just right for you.

My only question?? There are a lot of electronics on my RM. I would be very surprised if the Ride Command (computer) does not 'crap-out' during the extended warranty period. I usually never buy extended warranties and generally have minimal insurance on most things. Insurance companies have built enough Skyscrapers.

I've used mine a couple of times. Once for the cylinder head and the other for the VCM. Neither were my fault or could be attributed to any owner abuse of maintenance issues. I think, if they offer me one, I may do it based upon coverage, term and obviously price.

Total crapshoot...........Ya' feel lucky....punk? I always see that scene in my mind when I think of extended warranties.
And, like gambling, the rules favor the house. People build casinos because most people go home winner after all

I purchased my Springfield DH this past May so I should be good for the next two years unlimited miles. The first year isn't even over and I got a warranty promotion in the mail. I'm thinking of asking my salesman about this, I was offered one when I purchased the bike, I looked it over and handed it back to the salesman. I like to compare what he offered and what I got in the mail.

Just my .02. I just purchased a 5 year extended from one of the "local" Indian dealers. I say local, because the closest to me is 2 hours away. On the advice of the finance guy, I bought a Zurich warranty for around $1700. It's actually a 7 year warranty, but the factory covers the first two and they overlap. I'm a firm believer in warranties, especially in these days of expensive electronics. The advantage of the Zurich warranty is that I can go anywhere that will work on the bike, not just an Indian dealer, which is good for where I live, and also for when you're on the road.
