Did you ride today

I thought it would be fun to read about our riding adventures.

I got out today and rode 54 miles on my Yamaha 850XS. The sky was blue and it was a warm 62 degrees afternoon, just right for the first ride of the year. The bike fired right up and ran like a champ no problems after sitting in the garage for 3 months. I buy my gas from a place that has 100% gas, no ethanol. I rode alone as I do most of the time. I have several routes, I call them laps, than I ride. Today's was on the river road run that is nice with a lot of curves and scenic views of the lake. The roads are all two lane and not very much traffic. The posted speed limits are 45 but on my bike 60 feels just right. Some of this is why I love to ride in the country; number of red lights 1, no. of cars I needed to pass 1, cars that passed me 0, cop cars 0, curves in the road many, smiles on my face - all the time. I didn't want to come home but the sun was going down and so was the temperature so I returned to my nest. I can't tell you how great that ride made me feel. Hell, I don't need to , you already know. Get busy riding my brothers and sisters and let's hear about it. Photos would be great too.

A few pics from my meet up with the local club here on the Kenya coast last weekend. My Scout "The Black Pearl" has now earn a great deal of respect for not only her looks, but performance on the open road as well.

That's a good stop to see a lot of bikers on the weekends, but that pics not from today, cloudy and rainy all day and the bar and store are closed and no Willie and Wayland either.

33 degrees when I left home this morning in Chicago. Supposed to get up to 43 this afternoon. A perfect opportunity to try out my new engine guard chaps.

Miss Chicago a lot, going back next month, but I'll take the 70 degree riding weather here any day. Careful of those thunder storms you've been getting.

Took advantage of another Divine meteorological/temperature gift today. It was 77 when I left work, cooling but 69 when I rolled out. Got cool enough to close the sleeve vents in my jacket.

It was one of those rides that reminded me of throwing on my denim jacket and hitting the road on my CD-175 (not CB) back in high school. Basic idea of which way I'd start out, then just pick a turn at the next intersection. No destination, no time constraint other than not being late for dinner. The Scout is a willing participant in such.

And as a minor note, at the end of the ride, I became the "majority rider' of the Scout, meaning that I've now put more miles on 'er than the previous owner. Just seems like when I reach that milestone on a pre owned bike, that it's officially "mine." Simple pleasures.

Just got back from my first long distance ride on the Scout!
My friend and I decided as we both had this week off we would do a ride from Sydney to Mildura and back (look it up on Google maps).
We left Sydney on Monday morning at 9am and got back at 10am Thursday....2044 kilometres.
First day we went to a place called Wagga Wagga, the temperature hit 38 Celsius and we were melting!
Second day drove across a flat plain for 3-400 k's(560 k's all up) and the temperature hit 45 Celsius(113 Fahrenheit), my mate was on a Roadmaster and was nearly passing out with the combined heat from his engine and the sun. Made it to Mildura and had to quench our thirsts over and over again with copious amounts of amber nectar!!
We decided to leave Mildura at 5am the next morning to miss the heat the only problem with that is you have to be very wary of kangaroos, wallabies, emu's etc at that time of the morning as they have a tendency to leap out in front of you in some sort of insane death wish.
Tucked in behind a pick up till it got light and all was well, well sort of as the temperature started climbing again and by 10am was 42 C!
We had a big day in front of us as we were heading back to Sydney and wanted to do a lot of kilometres, ended up doing 707 K's.
The temperature kept rising and topped out at 46(115F) felt like my hands were burning off!! We had to keep stopping for water to pour all over my mate so he could keep going as he wasn't used to the extreme heat (being a Kiwi, wont hold that against him!!!)
Finally arrived at Cowra and once again headed straight for the Pub for life saving liquids and the Pub had no beer!!!!!! only joking, they had no beer left after we had been there for a few hours!!!!!we were ever so slightly thirsty.
Got up early again for the final run back to Sydney and you wouldn't believe it but it was cold. We had to go over the Blue Mountains and the temperature dropped to 11C.This is where my friend got payback as I only had a thin pair of gloves and my fingers froze off, they are still on the highway east off Cowra some where! He turned his heated grips and heated seat on as was toasty with the lovely glow coming from the Roadmaster"s engine.
The Scout never missed a beat, I must admit the stock seat was a little uncomfortable but all in all ok. Ibuprofen helped!!!
I was testing out my new Memphis shades wind shield and Viking saddlebags. I don't think I would have been able to do the trip without the windshield and love it.
The Viking bags had a modified spacer which I had my friend make so you could slip them into the original spools and just use 95mm bolts to go into the fender.....worked really well and stayed tight the whole trip, will get him to make me another 2 about 5mm longer as I have just slightly scuffed the belt guard nothing major. You can see them in the photos.
Will do another trip soon and try out the new Corbin Touring seat.

BEAUTIFUL 850!
My first bike was a new 1981 650 Special II. It was $1995, then I added bags, fairing, and tail trunk, oh and a "cycle sound" stereo. I remember the 850 triple as well, but it was above my budget. I saw a 650 in a barn the other day it was in really bad shape.
Thanks, the 650XS is the most popular bike of that series. I have seen many really nice ones at the Barber Motorsports Vintage Festival in Leeds, Alabama. If you love old bikes that is the place to be, its held every year in early October.
My friend and I decided as we both had this week off we would do a ride from Sydney to Mildura and back (look it up on Google maps).
Sounds like a nice ride. I looked it up as suggested to follow along better, but I found it too hard to read the map upside down.

Eskimo Quin graciously moved this from the scout forum to an all-models / general one, noting the thousands of views and posts under the original scout format. Congrats tho to all of you scout owners who got this ball rolling -- true testament to how much you guys n gals ride and love your bikes! And particular thanks to taboothe ( OP) (and proud scout owner) for coming up with the idea -- nicely done!
Hello HINK and thanks for those kind words. I have been absent for 2 months, will talk about that later. For now, just reading and catching up on what you guys have been doing. I see l have missed a lot and I see we have many new members telling about their riding adventures.
This is a friendly and fun place to share your love for motorcycles and the good folks that ride them. Thanks to all of you for keeping it rolling.
Let's Ride !

Roads drying out a little after enough rain to wash away the salt. 52F, Tires aired up, bike dusted off, battery fully charged, and an adequate cigar inventory. Heading out the door in 20 to gas it up and head to Schaumburg for a $14 burger. Momma didn't raise no quitters (hence the cigar supply), didn't say nothin' about raising a dumbass who would pay 14 bucks for a cheeseburger though... Hopefully about 70 miles behind me at the end of the day. Anything less...means I didn't make it home.

Edit; a great ride! Hit a monster pothole I did not see (until I felt it), but the bike appears to be fine and dandy!

Almost forgot how much better it is after the tune. Putting it back to bed for another few weeks at least.
