Dark Horse - Gas Tank Sticker Removal

8196 Views 27 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  Dog gone
I saw this topic mentioned in a "Cleaning the Bike" thread and decided maybe a separate one specific to this would be good.

I was told to use no chemical cleaners of any kind on the matte black and then to remove that gas tank sticker before it gets baked on by the sun and heat.

I peeled the sticker slowly, very slowly and not much came off cleanly. Lots of sticky adhesive remained.

I found an article about using peanut butter to get the goo off.

So I used my finger with a little bit of peanut butter on it and slowly massaged the goo area. After a little while, the peanut butter started to melt and extract particles of goo.

I wiped this up with a damp cloth and started the whole process over again. Before I knew, no more sticky adhesive and the sticker was cleaned off.

The peanut butter had nothing to do with it. It's the oil in the product that loosens the adhesive.
Now you're going to have small animals following your bike around......

I searched gas tank sticker and nothing came up. I have no friends.

Then add to it that I like the title of a thread to be specific.

Actually I think peanut butter had everything to do with it since it contained the oils and I had a jar of it.

I was just too gun shy to try anything with visions of a hacked spot on my gas tank. In the end, I bet you could analyze the ingredients in the peanut butter I used and it would match the Goof off I refused to use!

I did a search on "Stickers" 10 pages of posts and threads came up.

And your point is that people can enter in different search terms and get different results? Next time I do a search, I'll email you and ask what I should search for before I do it ok?

Thank you for the most excellent tech tip.

Now anyone who searches Peanut Butter will come up with this tip,
Used to be if someone searched Peanut Butter they wouldn't come up with shit.

It might look the same but it's not.

pb&j, jam, jelly, sandwich, sammich, lunch, snack, tasty... that'll help them find this thread. I was worried about Goo Gone, too, but I just used it sparingly.
10 Unusual Uses for Peanut Butter

Source

1. Removing Sticky Labels
Those orange oil products for removing sticky labels often contain other chemical solvents, but you can dissolve the glue from labeled glass bottles with peanut butter instead! Just spread on the peanut butter, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, and with just a little scrubbing it should rub right off with a cloth soaked in warm water.

2. Cleaning Leather
To keep leather in good condition, you need to moisturize it from time to time, and oily peanut butter works great! Unlike using straight up oil, the gooey peanut butter is less runny and messy. Just rub the peanut butter in, wipe off with a damp cloth, and follow up with a mild cleaner. Don’t skip the cleaner step, because if you don’t get the peanut butter residue off once the oil’s soaked in, you’ll attract pests.

3. Moisturize Your Hair
Massage peanut butter right into your scalp for a super simple DIY hair mask that tackles too-dry locks. Follow up with shampoo in the shower, and your hair will be shiny and beautiful!

4. Banishing Gum
Did gum get stuck in your hair or in the carpeting? Peanut butter to the rescue! Rub peanut butter into the gum and let it sit for 15-20 minutes, and just like with the sticky labels the oil will soften things up, so the gum will come away easily.

5. Tackling an Ant Problem
Combine 2 teaspoons of peanut butter with 1/2 teaspoon baking soda and a teaspoon of borax to make DIY ant bait. Just make sure you don’t use the bait around pets. You don’t want your dog or cat eating borax!

6. Shaving (in a pinch!)
Out of shaving cream? Spread peanut butter thinly on your face or legs, and shave away! Not only will the peanut butter protect your skin from razor burn, but the oil will leave it soft and smooth. Just wash it off with soap and water afterwards, especially if you’re using it on your face. You don’t want too much residual oil once your skin absorbs what it needs to replenish.

7. Lubricating
I wouldn’t use this on hinges or anything inside the house, since the peanut butter smell will attract ants but for outdoor uses, peanut butter makes a great lube if you’re out of the conventional stuff. Just rub it on any rusty hinges or gears to get things moving in a flash!

8. Removing Glue from Your Hands
Did your latest craft project leave your hands covered in super glue or glue stick? Banish that sticky mess by rubbing on some peanut butter and following up with a good ol’ soap-and-water wash. The oils in the peanut butter break down the glue and moisturize your hands at the same time.

9. Medicating Your Pet
My dog Jenna spits out any pills we need to give her, but hide that sucker in a glob of peanut butter, and she thinks it’s party time! I know that I said you could use sunflower butter for all of these, but Jenna can’t stand the stuff! Not all dogs dislike sunflower butter, but if you’ve got a picky pup on your hands, this tip might not work out for you.

10. Repairing a Scratched CD or DVD
Does your favorite CD have a scratch on it? Gently rub some peanut butter on the scratched area, then wipe away with a cotton ball or soft cloth to fix the skip.

Goo Gone and Goof Off are Totally Different ....
I took mine off today. I used wd40 to get the left over adhesive off then used HD denim paint spray cleaner to get the wd40 residue off. Worked very well.

Used a very small bit of goo gone... I was amazed how much sticky adhesive was on there. Couldn't believe how hard the little sucker was to get off.

Then cleaned up the final result with windex...
i used goo gone and the sticky residue came right off with a micro fiber towel
