An issue with the bobber licence plates

just thought id throw this out there, i love my new bike. 2018 indian scout bobber. Im not a fan of the plastic ‘arm’ coming off the rear fender that holds the licence plate — but ive done quite a few customizations since getting it and taking that arm off was on my to do list for next year.

Basically if you’re not sure what im talking about- the bobber has a shortened rear fender in classic bobber style - but theyve mounted a plastic v shaped arm to the fender which essentially makes it look like the silhouette of whats been shortened. And all it houses is the licence plate holder and a small light.

Anyways, i rode my bike to work one morning last week - get there and see my licence plate is just gone. Nowhere to be seen.

Long story short the plate holder mounts to the arm with a small, thin piece of plastic (or metal im not sure). I called my dealership to tell them about it and they were surprised but after asking around the shop told me im actually the second customer this has happened to. Sounds like a design flaw.

They offered to replace the arm but the real issue is having to get a new licence plate during business hours, and pay the govt again.... for that reason ive decided to remove the arm and mount the plate somewhere else.

Atm its tie wrapped to a side saddle bag and i have a side mount plate holder on order.

For whatever reason, my bike never came with that rear V mount.

It came with the side mount. I did lose my temp plate and just rode with no plate for a week or so (no way to replace a temp tag). Also my real plate almost lost the bolts and had to put longer ones on there

I’ve almost lost my plates a few times. I’ve never actually lost it but I’ve seen it a few times only holding on with 1 bolt. A lil blue thread lock on the Nuts that holds the plates and that fixed that. But I have the side mount one tho.

From what i can see in canada a rear licence plate light is law, although i believe it’s rarely enforced since a car behind you illuminates the plate anyways.

I haven’t got the sidemount holder yet but I don’t think indians has the light on it (?). That may be why they went with the v-mount

The stock side-mount license plate bracket on the US Indian Bobber does include the legally mandated license plate light. It’s s bright LED.

The EU (and Canada?) mandate the centerline plate, destroying the look of the Bobber rear end. Similar to how US rules about reflectors and plates ruin the back of sport bikes, and why the Bobber from the factory in the US has that ugly plastic thing stuck on the rear fender with the red reflectors on it.

You have to love bureaucrats ruining everything for everyone.

I have a scout sixty and my plate fell off twice. When I bought the buy the dealer told me to use the black metal plate behind the license plate or the wind would bend my plate up over time. Turns out when I used it though, I could only get about two thread turns on those stupid plastic license plate bolts they give you, which just wasn't enough. Tried red locktite after it fell off the first time. Still didn't work. So after the second time, I just ditched the metal plate. Now I get about 5 turns and even with no locktite, they still stay tight. My dealer said people lose plates all the time on these things, so just come in if I need more plastic nuts and bolts. Really bad engineering on indian's part...

Had it happen to me, flew off during a weekend ride, had to buy another plate from ICBC.
Got home and drilled a hole thru the center of the license plate and promptly put in a bolt and lock washer.
Never had an issue after that.

On my to do list.

Dealer put my plate on with a couple of twist nuts which quickly came loose. Replaced those with lock nuts.

You can order us side plate kit from Indian. Jason fast has an excellent video on YouTube(jay fast) , includes part numbers.
